Covalent Bonding Lab
In this lab, each person in the group will have two pennies. Galvanization of a penny will create a brass penny. Galvanizing the penny in sodium hydroxide with zinc causes the penny to turn from bronze to silver. Once the penny is fully galvanized you will burn the penny and spray it off and then it will turn gold. There will be a weight change also a mass change. Observing the penny to see it turn from bronze to silver to gold.

Literature review Covalent bonding is a bond when atoms share pairs of electron to become stable. For covalent bonding, two or more elements must have shared electrons. Atoms become stable by filling up their outermost shell with shared electrons. An atom can only have 8 electrons and that rule came from the Octet

Metals that tend to have high melting and boiling points and transition metals. Atoms that have the freedom to move are called delocalized atoms. An electron sea model helps visualize electron movement. The model accounts for the properties of metals like their conductivity, malleability, ductility, and low valuation. In ionic bonding, electrons are completely transferred from one atom to another. Ionic Bonds have another name, Electrovalent bond. These bonds form from electrostatic attraction between opposite ions of a chemical compound. Ionic bonding is the bond that creates ionic compounds. During the bond, some atoms are more stable when they lose or gain electrons to form ions. Since the numbers of electrons don’t match the umber of protons, that is why they create a net charge. Galvanization is named after an Italian scientist named Luigi Galvani. Galvanization is the process by which zinc is coated onto corrosive metals. This process refers to any of the several electrochemical processes. During the process, zinc simply will not adhere to a steel surface that is not cleansed perfect. The process creates a metallic bond that forms a brass coating on the penny. In order to create the bond, the mixture of zinc and sodium hydroxide had to be heated up for a minute before the pennies were added. Then to create the brass, we take the pennies out of the zinc and sodium hydroxide and let them dry. Then we burn them and spray them off when they change color and you get a brass
