The Difference Maker Essay
The Difference Maker is a self-help book that teaches you how to make your attitude an asset. John C. Maxwell, the book's author, uses a realistic approach in that he makes no claim that one's attitude is all powerful. Instead, Maxwell explains what attitude cannot do for you right from the start to curb unrealistic expectations. Attitude cannot replace competence nor can it change the facts. A positive attitude will not substitute for personal growth nor will it stay good automatically. Maxwell also talks about what attitude can do for you. Ironically, all the things that cannot be changed by your attitude are still aided by it. Competence makes a good example. A good attitude helps the learning process. Individuals with positive …show more content…
Maxwell revives and refreshes the age-old idea that attitude is a choice. Unfortunately, I had forgotten. There were many times when I felt it easier to give into the situation and let it control me. Eventually, I stopped feeling as though it were a choice. It felt and still feels innate. I imagine, through no deep contemplation on my part, that I allowed this to be my reality because it seemed easier in the short term.
Maxwell and I agree that a having a positive attitude takes work; it's high-maintenance. It is not an easy task to undertake. Once again, I imagine this is a large part of why I allowed my attitude to become an entity unto itself. The Difference Maker reminds me of the effort I must put in and highlights some of the steps I can use to take to back control. I must do the work if I want to be in control.
I will work to be consistent in controlling my attitude when I become a teacher. I am sure my attitude will be crucial in determining if I continue to teach. More importantly, however, I feel that I need to keep a good attitude so that I model healthy behavior for my students. I will also like to address having a positive attitude on the first day of each class. Throughout the year I hope to model this mindset indirectly both to my class and to each student individually as needed. Maxwell suggests wonderful ways of doing this in his book. A good example is finding the right perspective. I can offer

In order to properly advance and put forth their best effort, people must have the correct attitude towards what they are doing. Our attitude can align with our behaviors, however many times our attitude may be one thing and our behavior another. A person may say that they believe one thing, yet when it comes down to it their behavior may reflect that they either have a different belief or that acting out their attitude is merely not acceptable behavior (Gilovich et al., 2013). Attitudes can be a successful predictor of behavior (Gilovich et al., 2013). For example I have a good attitude about exercise, therefore it is something I incorporate into my life and make a priority. So my attitude does influence my behavior in a positive way. However I also have good attitudes about volunteering more, spending more time reading my bible and reaching out to people. More times than not my behavior falls short of my attitude. That being said, it appears that attitudes more often than not represent good intentions. Often times a person believes something and furthermore, they believe that they will follow through. Due to either time restrictions or just a lack of ability to follow through, many attitudes do not actually come to fruition through behavior. Perhaps thinking about an attitude can change it because you put forth some effort to analyze and understand why you may have that attitude. Awareness can be the catalyst for…

In order to provide a good education, and expect students to receive the information well, a professor must have an attitude that shows that they care. Professors are seen as a leader in some students’ eyes, because leaders teach, correct, encourage, and take care of their own with a cheerful attitude. A leader that shows that they don’t care about those under them will not be received well and the students will become nonchalant in their studies. The definition of attitude is, “evaluative statements either favorable or unfavorable about objects, people, or events. They reflect how we feel about something”(Robbins pg 7). In Organizational Psychology, it speaks on how Psychology works in a professional setting such as school or work. The attitude portrayed by a person feeds off onto others attitude in almost all cases. The book also goes on to say, “ In organizations, attitudes are important for their behavioral component” (Robbins pg 73). In the book, the definition of behavioral component means, “ an intention to behave in a certain way towards someone or something” (Robbins pg 73). This book also suggested that attitude “follows” behavior. If attitude follows behavior, then that means a person’s intentions in a school environment better be good, or else you will act upon what you feel; therefore, you will be perceived as a teacher with a bad attitude. Another part to providing excellent education is to be able to help develop them as a whole person; in other words, develop their “self”. In Psychology of Personality, you learn about “self” a lot, and what it entails. According to the book it says, “The central aspect of self, however, is surely our psychological self: our abilities and especially our personalities. Your self-image, and your need to maintain, may influence your behavior” ( Funder pg 661). In other words how people perceive themselves play a huge…

Difference, “The difference between genius and stupidity is; genius has its limits”-Albert Einstein. As in these three short stories from Sighlines10, “Borders” by Thomas King, “My body is my own business” by Sultana Yusufali and “Lysandra’s Poem” by Budge Wilson, are stories with factors of difference and its tolerance that can clearly be seen. In “Borders”, we can see that native people don’t really get treated fairly around places like borders. Secondly in “My body is my own business”, Sultana Yusufali addresses the audience about the hijab controversy and that hijabs are banned from being worn due to the ignorance of today’s society .Lastly in “Lysandra’s Poem”, Lysandra deals with things differently after losing something that meant a great deal to her and she found that losing the contest was a very big put down. People do not want to understand differences which then lead to tolerance.…

The book “Attitudes that Attracts Success” is a book of inspiration and knowledge about how our attitude can attract success. Wayne Cordeiro emphasized the advantages of those people who have good attitude than those who have a broken attitude. It is like finding two people who attended the same school, had the same teachers, shop at the same store, live in the same city and even attend in the same church. One struggles and the other is successful. Why? It is all because of attitude. Our attitude is important because it is the one which drives our lives.…
