The Cats Meow - Conclusions:

1. A) No, nobody in our group was able to float the pin, although we were very close. One major reason why this is a difficult task is because in order to float the t-pin you cant break water’s surface tension. Stability is key while trying to be successful in floating the pin on the water’s surface due to the fact that if you don’t place the pin on the right angle and right speed, it wont float.

B) If you very gently place the pin onto the surface of the water, not breaking the surface tension, its weight will pull the surface downwards, but because the surface is dented the surface tension will pull it upwards stopping it from sinking.

2.Yes, there were differences in how the food colouring behaved in water, oil and milk, before the soap was added. After adding the food colouring into the water, the food colouring slowly began moving towards the center of the Petri dish. After adding the food colouring into the milk, the food colouring instantly sinks towards the bottom of the Petri dish, and slowly disperses. After about one minute of the food colouring sitting on the bottom of the Petri dish, it then begins to move upwards once again and separates. After adding soap into the Petri dish containing water, the food colouring moves closer together, completely touching but you can still notice the 4 separate colours. After about 2 minutes, the soap completely moves to the side of the Petri dish, with a white shade appearing around it. When you add soap to the center of the milk, it quickly spreads out towards the edges, because soap reduces the surface tension of the milk.
