The Curse Of The Good Girl By Tonya Crosley's The Power
I apologize too much. This is something that I know about myself. I almost bump into someone, I say sorry. Someone almost bumps into me, I say sorry. I start speaking at the same time as someone else, I say sorry. My dog wants to go outside but there's a literal tornado outside, I say sorry. I've walked into actual inanimate objects and apologized to them. This isn't something that is unique to me. Many women find themselves over-apologizing, so much so that the shampoo company Pantene created a commercial called "Sorry Not Sorry" add centered around the idea and encouraging women to stop needlessly apologizing. Is it wrong that my immediate reaction was to apologize to a company trying to sell me conditioner? Tonya Reiman, author of The Power …show more content…
One is that women are constantly attempting to avoid seeming offensive or brash and apologize more than men because they have a lower threshold of what they constitute as being offensive (Crosley). Sorry softens the blow - "it's a space filler, a hedge, a way to politely ask for something without offending" (Bennett). The author of The Curse of the Good Girl, Rachel Simmons, expanded on this, "Women know they have to be likeable to get ahead. Apologizing is one way to make yourself more accessible and less threatening. Apologizing is one way of being deemed more likable" (Bennett). Apologizing can be used as a strategy, often unconsciously, to express something without being written off as just a "bitch." It can also mask frustration, like when it's 4:00 AM on a Wednesday morning and your neighbor is still blasting their music; "So sorry, but would you mind turning your music down a little bit?" Sorry can be used in "acts of revolts, expressions of frustration or anger at having to ask for what should be automatic," they can be a "Trojan horse for genuine annoyance, a tactic left over from centuries of having to couch basic demands in palatable packages in order to get what we want" (Crosley). Even in situations where frustration or anger is absolutely justified, women often soften it with an apology. There are many types of excessive apologizing, something I …show more content…
I put a sticky note on my desk and wrote a note on my phone, "no apologies!!" That didn't work so well. The first few days I made it through the whole day without remembering; "sorry" is such a part of my vocabulary it took a lot of conscious effort for me to cut out. I was very aware of the spaces the "sorry" should be filling; when a friend texted me when I was asleep so they didn't get an immediate response, when gently reminding a partner to work on a group project, when I showed up to meet a friend for dinner on time rather than five minutes earlier when they had gotten there. I kept feeling the compulsion to apologize, and when I didn't it felt odd, as if something was missing. I felt a little guilty, and it definitely heightened my anxiety a bit. I think the anxiety stemmed in part from worrying that I would come off as rude; I found I would much rather seem submissive than people think I was too domineering. Some of the anxious feeling also came from not completing the compulsion to say "sorry;" it felt uncomfortable to not do what I normally

But then come in the consequences. Those few little minutes, because of my immature behavior had caused me a punishment. A punishment I deserve, of course, but not worth it. Why if I would have been smarter, I would be sitting here writing this essay, for one. Sure I respect my punishment. And I will take it. I understand I deserve it. I just hope in the future, me or many others will think twice before engaging in foolish activities such as that. I mean even though I wasn’t physically…

Anne Frank wrote, “....in spite of everything, I still believe people are really good at heart,” in her diary. This statement is true, people really are good at heart. Anne wrote this during the Holocaust, which is when Hitler came to power in Germany. During this time the Jews and many other groups of people (ex. Gypsies, the disabled, and some Slavic peoples) were thought of as “inferior” to the Germans. The Germans would persecute and force the Jews to work. But even though all these bad things happened, evidence from the play, diary, and movie show that people truly are good at heart.…

Now when I say this, some people quickly apologize for even asking about it. This is absolutely a pet-peeve of mine. Never apologize for asking a question. You asked it and if the answer freaks you out-you should own it unapologetically. Plus, saying 'Sorry' does not make the question itself disappear nor is there anything to say 'sorry' for.…

Growing up I had difficulties with certain aspects of my relationships’ with friends’ and family. I can remember always having a mountain of anxiety when it came to reconciliation. Anytime I was in trouble it was a struggle for me to make an attempt to talk to whomever was upset with me. I would pace around the kitchen thinking of excuses and reasons I should wait to apologize for my actions. I wanted to be that girl who could just approach my parents and just say “I’m sorry, I know what I did was wrong.” I am as stubborn as it gets, though, so that was just not an option for me.…

Moreover, not admitting the wrong-doing may make the situation get worse and worse. For instance, if someone did something wrong in driving and he/she didn’t stop that might makes him/her pay a high fine or may get more than that like going to the jail. In another hand, if he/she accept the wrong-doing that will give opportunity to learn how to deal with similar situation. I think, wrong-doing always affects our life especially when we don’t face it. However, admitting that wrong doing may reduce the bad reaction and give us a chance to correct it. As a part of any job or duty, when we did something wrong we feel that this job or duty is un completed because it has something wrong. But, if we deal with it we…

In the text it says, “Don’t Say, Sorry to bother you about this, but… or I, uh, was sort of expecting... “. It expresses how important it is to not be apologetic about something someone has done wrong. “Your only asking people to remedy a problem, after all; that is not grounds for an apology.” The funny thing is, I often find myself in that position. It’s as if I apologize for inconveniencing someone’s time, when in fact, they should be inconvenienced due to their mistake, not mine!…

how to talk to your boss

Here is the philosophy on how to let your boss know when you have made a mistake. Most people have a defense mechanism that they do not want to accept responsibility for it. Typically, when you were kids you would point to your sibling. Well he did it. Johnny did it. She did it. I did not do it. It was not my fault. That if the instinct. The proper thing to do is be an adult. Own up to it. Accept responsibility for what you have done wrong. Go and talk about it with your boss if you need to. So that you can bring it to their attention, so that they can help you to deal with it. If you are dealing with a client or sometimes you have liability issues. Whatever it is, you cannot go wrong by calling attention to what it is, so that at least your team and your company are better prepared to deal with whatever it is that went wrong. If you try to hide it. If you try to pocket it, you try not to accept responsibility or worse yet to push it off on somebody else, all you do is reduce the respect level that your coworkers and your boss will have for you and make yourself look bad. When you accept responsibility for it, even though you have made a mistake, lets your boss know that a, you are human and you were big enough to own up to it. It does not have to be the solution, it just has to be that they have been thoughtful enough and put in enough time and cared enough about what they were doing to be able to say, look Step, I made this mistake. Here is what I think we can do to fix it. What you think? And then at least collaborate with me so we can come to an agreeable solution. Something that is mutually beneficial to the company or to whoever we happen to be working with. You really can not fault someone when they put in the forethought and the time. It is like someone who puts an enough thought to write you a card versus dropping you an e-mail. Somebody took the time to get out the ink, to pick the fountain pen,…

There was a time, one of my friends called me to complain about his boss. He told me that his boss always gave him a hard time. He said he wants to quit the job, and he sounded very depressed. I totally understood what he was saying. I wanted to give him some advice afterwards, but I did not know what I should say. So I complained about his boss with him at the beginning, then I started to analyze the situation and judged about his behaviors. I made him uncomfortable at that moment. I might fuel his anger even more by accident. He turned his anger towards me. I felt wronged and argued with him. Finally we hung up the phone with an unhappy closure. My mom was on her computer next to me when I was on the phone. She heard most of our conversations, and she said “no one is going to like to talk to you if you keep up with the way you talk, your friend was trying to get comfort from you, but you scolded him right away.” I felt guilty, so I called him back and apologized to him.…
