The Chronicles of Karabakh
A JOURNEY IN TIME

“The Chronicles of Karabakh. 1989-2009” is an illustrated coffee-table book, personally compiled by the well-known author, screen-writer and film director, Boris Baratov. It is published by “Linguist” Publishers. The book is divided into five sections: “The Road of Life”, “The Angel”, “Death in Karabakh”, “Paradise Ruined” and “Twenty Years On” and consists of 512 pages, illustrated with more than 1,000 original photographs, which the author himself took in Karabakh, Armenia, Cilicia and in museums throughout the world. Only in the chapter on the war in Karabakh are Boris Baratov’s photographs supplemented by shots taken by the “Azat Artsakh” photo journalist Ruslan Sarkisian and some of his colleagues, whom the author describes in the section “The profession of a reporter”. The iconographic and archive research was undertaken by Anna Petrosova. It is worth noting that this book was printed in Italy and the print quality is extremely high.

Boris Baratov has spent more than twenty years working on his “Chronicles of Karabakh”. This book is made up of diverting travel notes, which skilfully interweave history and contemporary affairs. The historical touches on the general canvas of the storyline have been placed carefully, even delicately, which is a sure sign of artistic talent. This book will not only introduce the reader to monuments of history and culture, but also to living people, many of whom are well-known in Karabakh. The fates of the majority of the characters featured in this book are followed over the course of the last twenty dramatic years, from 1989 to 2009.

Although the book is called “The Chronicles of Karabakh”, it does not limit itself solely to the history of Artsakh-Karabakh, but also gives a comprehensive overview of the history of the whole Armenian people. It forms a unique mosaic, recounting the fates of the various branches of our people, which have been scattered throughout the world by the whims of

However, the main purpose for the settings of Yalta and Moscow are to influence Gurov’s motives and feelings. The atmosphere that Gurov is open to is infectious. The locations of Yalta and Moscow represent two different ideologies in Gurov’s life. The location called S. is brief, but also entails a rebellious attitude. The plot overall is pushed forward by the chronological change in venue.…

Amy Knight begins her book, How The Cold War Began: The Gouzenko Affair And The Hunt For Soviet Spies, by stating, “There was nothing ordinary about Igor Gouzenko.” She was right, his life was anything but ordinary. Igor Gouzenko was born in 1919 in a village called Rogachov, Russia located near Moscow. Gouzenko’s mother went into labour during the time of the Russian Civil War (1917-1922). It was a time of uprisings and famine. As his mother laid in bed she could hear the anguish of women and children, the cries of those who had been injured, guns being fired, and she could not help but think, “A new life is about to be born. What is in store for it?” What laid ahead for Igor Gouzenko was a life of fear, from being a young child and the…

Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment centers on Raskolnikov, a man who chooses to murder a common pawnbroker while he struggles with guilt, alienation, and pride. The choice to commit murder creates a division between Raskolnikov and society because he violates the moral laws governing society. In Crime and Punishment, the rift between Raskolnikov and society is both alienating and enriching for his character and demonstrates Dostoevsky’s opinion of an individual’s place in society.…

So, when the Ottoman took over their country, the leader decided to make some different changes to their government. So that if they were involved with any other religion, then they would answer to the ruler. This sounds more like the Salem Witch Trials, but without people pointing out that they were in belief in another religion. Like the Salem Witch Trials, the Armenians, didn’t really have much of a choice, other than to rot in jail or die on the…

A parallel joining the loss and redemption in this novel is the story of today's inhospitable environments in Afghanistan and of Amir's guilt-ridden relationship with the rundown city of his birth. "If you went from the Shar-e-Nau section to Kerteh-Parwan to buy a carpet, you risked getting shot by a sniper or getting blown up by a rocket-if you got past all the checkpoints, that was. You practically needed a visa to go from one neighborhood to the other. So people just stayed put, prayed the next rocket wouldn't hit their home." (Hosseini 256). In the modern world, Afghanistan is just as it is portrayed in this novel. The climates have not changed and the community acceptance has diminished.…

The past and present comparison exists as the centerpiece guiding Orhan’s narrative. On one hand, the past, thoroughly glorified, represents the lost Ottoman Empire. On the other hand, the present, marked by the process of Westernization and Ataturk revolution, describes Istanbul as “a pale, poor, second-class imitation of a Western city” (Pamuk 78). Our understanding of this dichotomy is augmented through Pamuk’s use of various literary techniques. “Blackened” vernacular and a selection of black and white photographs inserted within the text portray his affinity for ancient ruins, humbling minarets and his misgivings towards newly constructed Western infrastructure.…
