Throughout the story Jesse Collins was referred to as the "Indomitable Jesse Collins". On the first night that the men of the Newfoundland were stuck on the ice the men were tired and hungry from their march from the Newfoundland to the Stephano, all the men wanted to do was to get something to eat and lay down to sleep. Jesse knew that if they stopped moving and slept that they would most likely never get back up again, so instead he motivated the men. He wouldn't let them sleep or even sit down for any amount of time. Jesse kept the men moving by walking in a circle and patting the back of the fellow in front of them to try to also warm up their shoulders. When the men's eyelids would become frozen shut by the ice they would stumble around blind until Jesse Collins came to each of them, on by one he would bit off the ice chunks from the eyebrows and eyelids so they could see once again. In turn of him biting off the pieces of ice he froze he lips. Since Jesse was so determined to keep the men on his pan alive, that he lost only a couple of men during the night in contrast to Dawson's pan which was referred to as a morgue.…

The repeated references to sledding, and to the dangers associated with it, foreshadow the climactic scene in which Ethan and Mattie crash into the elm tree. When they reach Starkfield they see some boys with sleds leaving the sledding-grounds, and at the top of the hill Ethan asks Mattie if she’d like to coast down with him one time before they drive to the station. Mattie says there isn’t time, but Ethan helps her onto a sled that’s lying under the trees and climbs on behind her. Mattie asks him if he can see, and Ethan says he could steer them down with his eyes closed. He peers through the dusk and they fly down the hill, passing safely by the elm. Ethan asks Mattie if she was scared, and she replies that she is never scared when she’s with him. Ethan boasts that he is a good judge of distances, but that one swerve would have sent them into the elm, and they’d “never ha’ come up again” (128). Ethan feels strong and competent; Mattie feels protected and cared for. Ethan’s boast that his judgment saved them from a collision makes Mattie realize that they could easily kill…

The weather and temperature were the major conflicts in this story. The whole point of this trip was to hunt some animals down, but because of the weather and temperature, the animals were nowhere to be seen. “Each day it [would grow] colder” (para. 12), “[causing] the animals [to move] west or south to lower valleys” (para. 12). It was bound to snow anytime; and on “the fifth day [of the trip] there were two inches of snow on the ground” (para. 14). The hunters knew they would “have real trouble getting out” (para. 14) and they needed to decide whether to leave or to stay. “The snow on the dry grass made [the inclines] slippery” which is why “the boy had trouble keeping up” (para. 15) with his father. With the “snow and wind rising” (para. 19), the branches were getting icy as they “clawed at their clothing” (para. 21).…

Trying to reach the camp by himself with no one else, but a dog, the “Man” completely ignores the temperature and believes that it “did not matter” other than an obstacle to get around. He believes that if a person keeps moving, the temperature doesn’t matter and it won’t effect the journey other than a hinderance of moving. The “Man” continues on his journey while his fingers and toes are already numb, leaving the rest of the body to quickly follow. After falling through ice into water, the “Man” is quick to build a fire and when he succeeded, the snow-filled tree dropped snow on the top of it. He assessed the situation and realized that “he should not have built the fire under the pine tree”. Pine trees are a weak type of tree and their limbs will bounce if pressure is applied, the “Man” ignored the obvious hazard and built the fire under the tree, finishing the fire and himself off. By ignoring the temperature and losing the fire, allows fate to complete with his death and make him unsuccessful toward his want of reaching the camp.…

The powerful phrases prove the author’s love for the pets. Since he/she loves the pets, the tone of frustrated is really enforced when the author accuses the owners of negligent behavior. The author also may be trying to provoke empathy in the reader. The phrase “deep bond” is very personal. It might trigger the reader to remember an animal they had a bond to in the past. The author then strikes the reader by saying “what if an animal were to run out in front of a moving vehicle?” That reader connection is turned into possible hatred to these irresponsible owners; what if that had been their dog? The tone then becomes sly instead of caring. The author formed an understanding between the reader and the animal for the sake of breaking it to prove a point to the reader - that pets should be kept on leashes for their own safety. This also suggests the author’s character. He/She loves the animals, but would still create bad visuals solely for the…

Jerry learned some new ideas from his range of experiences with the dog. Jerry makes a comment about the landlady’s dog being like a descendant of Cerberus, a mythological dog (1159). The reason he makes that comparison is because the rooming house, is like hell and the dog is its gatekeeper (1156). While Cerberus is the gatekeeper of Hades, making sure the right people come in and nobody gets out. An idea we get from this is that the landlady’s dog, when he bites Jerry is trying to keep him out, because he does not think that Jerry belongs at the rooming house. But at first, Jerry just thinks that the dog does not like him and think he is being cruel. Jerry will not accept that and he wants to mend some sort of relationship with the dog. This gets us to the main point he brings up that he learned, and that was the teaching emotion. The teaching emotion is when you combine together, during the same occurrence, kindness and cruelty. Yet each by themselves, independent of each other, only creates individual effects not intermingled with anything else. First Jerry tried to be kind to the dog by feeding him, bring him meals every time that he entered the rooming house. Yet after the dog would devour the food, he would still try and attack Jerry (1158). Since the dog’s lack of attitude adjustment became apparent after Jerry’s act of kindness, it angered him so he decided to attempt the contrary. He had been feeding the dog hamburger meat, so one day he tainted the meat with rat poisoning (1158). After the dog survived the poisoning, Jerry realized that a relationship could be salvaged and he could have a relationship with a dog that he could never share with people. Jerry thought through his kindness he could win the dog over, and that did not happen. This made him angry, and so he decided to be cruel…
