Ethan Frome Vs Man
A person has wants and needs, but usually dwells on the wants though it may be out of reach or unrealistic. By ignoring the obvious signs of the fated end and continuing to their goal, they get the results that has already laid out for them, instead of what they wanted. In Edith Wharton’s Ethan Frome and Jack London’s “To Build a Fire”, both Ethan Frome and the “Man” are striving to their goal even though there are obstacles in their way, which they ignore. Ethan and the “Man” fall harder in their disappointment of the outcome when they disregard the signs, causing disillusionment when it was too late. The want for Mattie Silver and the overlooking of signs, leads Ethan Frome to sorrow by not reaching his goal of being with Mattie. After the …show more content…
Trying to reach the camp by himself with no one else, but a dog, the “Man” completely ignores the temperature and believes that it “did not matter” other than an obstacle to get around. He believes that if a person keeps moving, the temperature doesn’t matter and it won’t effect the journey other than a hinderance of moving. The “Man” continues on his journey while his fingers and toes are already numb, leaving the rest of the body to quickly follow. After falling through ice into water, the “Man” is quick to build a fire and when he succeeded, the snow-filled tree dropped snow on the top of it. He assessed the situation and realized that “he should not have built the fire under the pine tree”. Pine trees are a weak type of tree and their limbs will bounce if pressure is applied, the “Man” ignored the obvious hazard and built the fire under the tree, finishing the fire and himself off. By ignoring the temperature and losing the fire, allows fate to complete with his death and make him unsuccessful toward his want of reaching the camp. The disillusionment of Ethan Frome is the turning point of his thoughts and how everything is supposed to be. On the way down the hill toward the elm tree, Ethan gets a vision of his wife’s face as it “thrust itself between him and his goal” and realizes the effects of killing themselves would have on his wife. He moves the sled enough

In “To Build a Fire”, by Jack London, the man is unable to withstand the unyielding Yukon climate because of his inability to recognize danger and his lack of imagination. In the beginning of “To Build a Fire”, the man is trekking in the snow covered Yukon hoping to reach camp by nightfall when he spits and it solidifies mid air, due to the below freezing temperatures. When he spits into the air, “There was a sharp, explosive crackle that startled him” (8). The man fails to notice that he should not be traveling in such cold weather, even after his own spittle freezes. Subsequently, the man does not succeed in sustaining a fire because his hands are numb and a piece of moss extinguishes the fire, when he thinks about killing the dog for…

Battle of the Books: Ethan Frome vs. Of Mice and MenMany novels are meant to be enjoyed by the reader as they are read. Some novels may relate to everyday relationships, while others may relate to society in general. Two authors that deal with these topics are Edith Wharton and John Steinbeck. Edith Wharton born Edith Newbold Jones to a wealthy family in New York combined her insider's view of America's privileged classes with a brilliant, natural wit to write humorous and incisive novels and short stories. On the other hand, John Steinbeck, born on February 27, 1902, in Salinas, California spent his summers working on nearby ranches. His inspiration came from everyday life as a worker. Ethan Frome, the title character of Edith Whartons tragic novel Ethan Frome, lives in his own world of silence, where he replaces his scarcity of words with images and fantasies. While, on the other hand, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is a modern parable about the unfairness of human society.…

Motifs are interesting literary devices, treasured by many authors, to make up or help support the plotline of each story written. In the novella Ethan Frome, by Edith Wharton, she uses the motif of parallelism of the setting of Starkfield, Massachusetts, and other characters such as Ethan Frome and Mattie Silver, to help describe the way that Starkfield and other factors entangle each character mentally, emotionally, and physically. The importance of this is evident, as it shows during key periods in the story.…

Some decisions have an everlasting effect on one's life. Ethan Frome, the protagonist in Edith Wharton's Ethan Frome, is tormented by his passionate love for Mattie Silver, but is morally shackled to Zeena by the sacred bonds of marriage. After years of harsh life with his wife in the dreary town of Starkefield, Ethan comes to believe that his greatest chance at a happy life is with Mattie Silver, a cousin of Zeena, who has come to live with him. However, in the end Mattie's other side, one which is extraordinarily similar to Zeena's attitude, comes to light, after a thwarted suicide attempt. In Ethan Frome, Edith Wharton makes an ironic comment on the choices present in an impoverished world by presenting contrasting images to describe Zeena Frome and Mattie Silver, yet also presenting details which make them seem alike.…

The author continues to add to the realism by the expressive emotions of the characters and how they react to one another. "'Then you don't want to leave us, Matt?' He had to stoop his head to catch her stifled whisper: 'Where'd I go, if I did?' The answer sent a pang through him but the tone suffused him with joy. He forgot what else he had meant to say and pressed her against him so closely that he seemed to feel her warmth in his veins"(21). This passage shows that Ethan cares for Mattie and is concerned for her. After he puts a simple question to her about staying on or leaving, he has mixed emotions about her answer and the tone with which…

Zeena, Ethan Frome’s wife experiences much suffering due to Ethan. Ethan spent his whole life never being able to stand up for himself. He chose to marry Zeena for the sole reason that she would end his loneliness. It could have also been the fact that he felt bad that she dedicated her life to taking care of Ethan's mom. Next, Ethan decided to give Zeena a loveless relationship. Never in the text does Ethan show any sort of emotion toward his wife, nor does she show any towards him. Ethan is somewhat awful towards the one in which he personally chose to be his wife. He chooses to go to "work" rather than drive her to the doctor, he decides to pursue another woman who is his wife’s cousin, and lastly, he chooses to kill himself for the sake of his own independence and his “love” for Mattie. Zeena however, can be aggravating at times which causes Ethan to act certain ways. Zeena tragically has “hypochondria” which brings out the cold, unhappy, domineering woman who whines and complains incessantly. Ethan lets Zeena dominate him which shows his flaw of being subordinate. These mistakes eventually lead to his fall. It is clearly seen that Zeena uses illness to get Ethan’s attention and love he hasn’t been giving. Zeena makes it hard for Ethan to show how he feels about Mattie in his heart, because when she comes around, Ethan is blindsided by her thoughts in his head. "...but there was only one…

They insist that Ethan deserves his fate because of the opposing syllogism, stating that one deserves his fate when he chooses impulses rather than morals. Ethan chooses to follow his impulses rather than his morals. As a result, Ethan deserves his fate. One believer of the opposing syllogism, fellow CHS student Matthew Weder, argues that Ethan deserves his fate because of his apparent fear for Zeena. He relates Ethan’s case of determinism to those at the Special Olympics. He believes the disabled population can decide to be happy or sad about their current situation. Despite the amount of free will offered, the decision to be either happy or sad is amoral. They can choose whether to live a happy life or a miserable life. The decision does not reflect others as in Ethan’s case. Weder claims that “throughout Ethan Frome, Ethan creates a cage made of fear. The most prominent material of his cage is the fear of confronting Zeena.” It may be true that Ethan decided to marry Zeena out of his impulses rather than his morals, but after the marriage, Ethan had full responsibility for Zeena. He mainly provided for her when she did not feel well. The relationship had no intimate connection whatsoever, hence the lack of communication between the two. Ethan had nothing in common with Zeena so it was…
