The Argument Against Homework

The debate against homework is quite interesting, actually. There are people on one side saying that we should be given no homework, people on another side saying that we should be given “quality” homework, and then you have people that are indifferent on the topic saying that we should be given homework, however to an extent. There are studies proving that all three sides have some points to back up their opinion on their topic. 2). Those who are for homework do, in fact, believe that homework can be very helpful in quite a few ways. Even some who believe that homework is not helpful cannot say that they would have made it to this high of an education without at least doing some homework unless they cheated their way through. As stated in Wilson’s “Work Smarter, Not Harder: The Debate Over Homework”, “Stressed or not, it is the only real responsibility that many children have” (par. 6). Now, I do partially disagree with that because many children have more than just homework to do when they get home; however, in her case, and many others’, that may have been true. Although many children do have multiple responsibilities outside of school, I do believe that homework can help teach responsibility to children for keeping their grades up. I do agree that with specific techniques, dealing with the quality of homework, it can be a major help to students (Paul). If you are a student and all you are assigned for each night is everything you learned in class that day and basically forget about every other thing you did that week, how well do you think your test scores will actually be? I am not against homework in any way whatsoever, I know that homework has helped me in the past and will continue to help me for the rest of my education, the thing that I am against though, is the amount of homework that we are given. I believe that homework can be just as helpful as it is “harmful” if not more. I agree that homework can decrease family time or amount of sleep, which should in some way, I believe, come to a stop considering that it is unhealthy for a growing child, but with the right quality of homework, it can be better for all of those who want to succeed and grow intellectually in
