Luke helps the Rebel Force defeat the Death Star, which is a big deal. The Death Star is capable of destroying entire nations, and it was taking the Rebel Force a long time to defeat it. But, with Luke’s help, they were able to destroy the Death Star, which helped save many nations in the future. This was a big deal, so Luke got a reward for it. A ceremony was held, and Luke received a medal and money. He also received honor and pride that would be able to help in the future. Gilgamesh also received a reward, though very different from Luke. Gilgamesh’s quest was for eternal life. He didn’t receive this, but he received something much greater. Before leaving on his quest, Gilgamesh was a very arrogant god/human who only cared about being known. However, at the end of his journey, he changes within and gains humbleness. While he didn’t receive any physical award like Luke, he did receive an award that will make him a better person. This reward will help him in later life just like Luke’s

For the Historical Book Report I decided to read April Morning by Howard Fast. This book takes place in the beginning of the Revolutionary War. Adam Cooper, one of the main characters, is a fifteen year old who lives with his family in Lexington, Massachusetts. He is oppressed ( as the book says) by his father, Moses Cooper, which means to keep someone in subservience and hardship. Not only does Adam get watched over , but his father questions whether or not his son is a man or not. This effects where and what he does. An example of this is when Adam wishes to attend a Township Committee meeting on April 18th , but he didn't go because his father didn't want him to. Since his father is very hard on him, he always relies on his Grandmother to make him feel better. Instead of going to the meeting, Adam goes to see his neighbor and second cousin, Ruth Simmons, she is the woman Adam can see marrying in the future, he loves her. When Moses got home from the meeting, Adam secretly listens in to his father telling his wife Sarah and Granny Cooper about news he heard at the meeting. He was talking about the British army potentially confronting us, so the colonial community is preparing. In Lexington, sometime after midnight the community is awakened with news that the British Army is on the march to Concord to take out munitions being stored by colonists for a possible rebellion. A muster, which is assemble troops, for inspection or in preparation for battle, is put together for the militia, and Adams signs up in the muster book and commit to the militia. Adams is very determined and set to go, for this reason Moses allows him to go and is right by him when he signs up. Sarah, Adams Mother, is very sad that he is going , but Moses explains how much Adams really wants to do this.…

House to House by David Bellavia (Bell) is a personal memoir of his experiences during the Iraq war. The book follows Bell and his men on their mission to clear opposing forces out of buildings in Fallujah, which was the most dangerous city for armed forces in Iraq. While following through with the task they faced staggering opposition and at times overwhelming odds. In order to survive this suicide mission Bell and his men transition from average men to machines that are programmed to survive at any costs. Due to the extremely close quarters of the homes that they were required to clear lead to hand to hand combat at times which is so personal that it will change a man forever. In House to House Bell's goal is to convey the idea that war plunges…

I read the book Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult. The story begins in a small town in Sterling, New Hampshire. At the high school, you read about a routine day of students in classes. As a student runs out of class to leave for an orthodontist appointment a loud bang goes off in the parking lot, which turns out to be a bomb set off in Matt's car. The students are confused by the noise and gun shots are fired. Patrick, the only detective on the Sterling police force (which is just stupid to have only one), hears on his radio about the shooting at Sterling High School. Patrick sees several students on the floor, surrounded in blood. The boy is dead and has a gunshot in his head while his girlfriend, Josie wakes up and cant…

American history is so much more interesting now than it was when I was growing up! I have just finished reading Mayflower: A Story of Courage, Community, and War by Nathaniel Philbrick. First of all, I was surprised to see a book on this summers New York Times Best Seller List about a subject so long ago. I would have thought the story about the Pilgrims had been told enough times no one would bother writing another book. Philbrick has written an enlightening account of the 17th century events that shaped our country. It was a story that is well written and enjoyable to read.…

The novel War of the Eagles by Eric Walters, is an excellent example of a Canadian novel and I strongly believe it should be nominated for the CBC Canada Reads award. The purpose of my writing is to persuade readers into reading War of the Eagles because the book is a must read for all Canadians in order to learn about the struggles immigrants faced in the old days. Many Canadians have little to no knowledge of the treatments of immigrants and thus continue to accept racism in today’s world. This is an important issue to address because it touches on racism and how it prevails in Canada.…

The Avila family closely relates to my family during a holiday, or sometimes just in general. Our Thanksgiving is very similar based on the way we celebrate it. Both the Avila’s and my family are both big and that makes it fun to celebrate. Therefore, we all have some what a same tradition were the older women cook the food while the younger women watch them.…

I spent some time thinking of some meaningful places to me but the one that stands out the most is a table. Its not an ordinary table but rather yet a very long picnic table, one that could hold about forty people. During the summer months this table is filled with some of the most interesting and friendly people I have ever been around. For the past three years I have worked for a whitewater rafting company on one of the more challenging rivers in the Southeast. Our home base is what we call the “outpost”, its where we eat, sleep, shower, and live our lives in what some people might call a barbaric way of life. The outpost consists of about forty or so river guides that take people down challenging class four and five whitewater during the day and then come home for an evening of events at night. At the outpost we have one raft guide that has decided to lay down their paddle in order to supply the community with delicious food every night at 6. Tired from paddling on the river all day, river guides are relaxing but mostly hungry. Some are lying down in what we call “bungalows” it’s an extravagant way of describing the home…

Thanksgiving, one of the most joyful times of the year- unless you're a turkey. You see, this whole Thanksgiving thing started about four hundred years ago. In that time, more than 18000 million of my closest relatives have been murdered. I would escape but i'm a domestic turkey, so i can't fly. I were a wild turkey, i would waddle away from this place, after all, a am the biggest turkey in the pen. Many of the young fryers in my pen don’t know their fate, but I do. How does one of the most highly respected animals in the animal kingdom fall this low, I mean, we were almost the national symbol of the United States of America and now, we are being ripped apart, pulverized, and eaten by our own people. Us turkeys have to watch out for our own, it's a dangerous world out there.…

Have you ever wondered when the first thanksgiving was celebrated. Most people would say that the first thanksgiving was in November of 1621, but actually Thanksgiving was not official till 1864 during the American Civil War. President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens," to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November. Today’s thanksgiving compared to the 1621 thanksgiving despite all the differences pilgrims and the indians had many different things then what we have today. For example they didn't eat the delicious homemade pies or they didn’t go and buy a turkey they had to catch it themselves. Many people do different things on Thanksgiving Day. Many people on thanksgiving eat turkey, but not everyone does. For example at least 3% of the people in Mrs. Norwines 3rd hour class doesn’t eat turkey. Some of the student ether eat ham or they just eat the other appetizing foods there as well. As most people would announce the main theme of thanksgiving is turkey and the food. According to our 3rd hour class the main point of thanksgiving is spending time with your family and friends. Many students in my class do different and similar things on thanksgiving.…
