I was texting my daughter to ask when she would be home for dinner on a late afternoon. She texted back, I will be there soon. She never made it. I killed my own daughter because of a lousy text message. Good afternoon, my name is Rebecca Wilson and today I will be speaking about why texting and driving should be banned. Over 10,000 people are killed and over 50,000 are injured from text messaging and knowing that my little girl was one of the 10,000 people that have been killed by this each year makes me heartbroken. That’s why I want to change this for the better. I would do anything to stop unnecessary and tragic deaths of young people from texting worldwide and that is why I am saying this speech to you today.

Firstly, texting and driving must be banned because it is very hazardous not only to the person who is texting and driving, but for the other drivers and pedestrians. If a person is texting and driving, they are multitasking and paying more attention to their phone than the safety of the other drivers and pedestrians. This causes a great amount of car accidents every year. While driving, adults and teenagers cannot resist the urge to pick up their cell phone and send a text or respond to one. When the driver feels or hears the vibration or ring, nothing can stop them from checking the notification on their phone. As soon as the driver’s eyes meet their cellular device, their focus on the road is drawn away making not only their lives in danger but the lives of other people on the road as well. In 2011, 9,750 lives were taken and 448,000 people got injured from car accidents from being distracted while driving. The lives of innocent people are being taken every day, due to a simple distraction. You could stop this by introducing increased fines, jail sentence and public shaming as a law for texting whilst driving.

Furthermore, texting and driving must be banned because it distracts you from the road. Also, it is unsafe to only use one hand while driving. I once saw a study on TV that showed how much someone's eyes move around to check out their surroundings while driving and then the study showed how little they move around while driving and texting on a phone. People managed just fine back in the days before cell phones; we should all be able to manage without them for a 15 minute or 30 minute drive or however a long car drive. A safe following distance on the freeway is 4 seconds. If you are texting and the person in front of you suddenly stops and your eyes aren’t on the road, even if you are only looking away for seconds to text, it will not be enough time to stop before colliding. This distraction will most certainly cause a car accident because 5 seconds is the minimal amount of time it takes to send a text message.

Finally, texting and driving must be banned because it causes so much grief on the family in the case of a fatality. When you text and drive you’re not only hurting yourself but you are hurting other people. I'm sure you don't want to go to your sons or daughters funeral because of a text like I had too. No text is that important it can wait. If your message can’t wait pull over and send it don’t destroy your own life or anyone else’s life because of it. You don’t want to end up being ashamed for the rest of your life. Too many people aren’t caring enough about this because there is an estimated 65% of drivers are texting and driving every single day.

To conclude, texting and driving must be banned because it is very hazardous not only to the person who is texting and driving, but for the other drivers and pedestrians on the road, it distracts you from the road and it causes so much grief on the family in the case of a fatality. If you want to live for another day, don’t text and drive, you will regret it!

Thank you for listening.

The number of people who have been affected by texting and driving is dramatically increasing. Clearly the laws, punishments, and education up to this point have not done much to change how people view texting and driving. Due to the facts that have been revealed about texting and driving, it is imperative that the government takes strong action to fight this rising epidemic. Although it may be near impossible to keep people off their phones, it is vital that stricter laws are put against it. Law enforcement, including police and the judicial system must put their foot down and stand by it. All ages must be targeted as well. Even though older people may think they are more experienced behind the wheel, accidents can happen and they should not be able to use their phones either. It should also no longer be a question whether it is a safe time to pick up the phone and send a quick text. The punishments must be toughened, forcing people to face harder consequences if caught texting while driving behind the wheel. License suspension would be a strong preventive in order for people to keep both hands on the wheel. On top of the new laws that should be put against texting while driving, drawing attention and focus to people who have suffered tragedies from texting and driving could be a key part to prevent more from happening. Making sure people are fully educated, enforcing stronger laws, and following through with stricter punishments are the first things that need to be done in order to keep people off their phones. Do you want the last thing you see before flying off the road to be “What r u doing? LOL”? There is nothing so important in a text message that cannot wait until later. Do not let any more young individuals lives be taken from texting and driving. Do something about…

Driving is a privilege, and in many cases this privilege is abused. Some people don’t take driving seriously and this often results in terrible accidents. Other innocent people sadly become victims of this carelessness. The U.S banned several acts that result in accidents such as drinking under the influence. Driving while under the influence was banned because it affects the drivers’ concentration. Doesn’t texting while driving do the same thing? When a driver is texting his/her focus is not on the road and at any moment the driver may lose control of their vehicle. Texting while driving should be banned in every state because it’s a dangerous act; this ban will decrease the amount of accidents caused by this act, and it will provide safety for fellow drivers.…

Texting and driving affects everybody in a threatening way. It only takes a maximum of five seconds for someone's attention to get taken off the road while texting. Texting makes a crash twenty three more times likely to happen. If one is dialing, texting, or listening on a phone behind the wheel, the likeliness of an accident happening is 2.8 times greater for every minute that goes by. For even just reaching for your phone an accident is 1.4 times more likely (“Texting and Driving Statistics”). Since this situation has the ability to create all of these accidents, then the consequence should clearly be…

State, Federal, and local lawmakers have placed laws into effect to ban the use of cell phones while driving. No state bans all cell phone use (handheld and hands free) for all drivers, but many prohibit all cell phone use by certain drivers. Even with laws permitting laws enforcement to ticket individuals who are caught texting, people continue to ignore the laws. Here are some solutions we can try: (1) Create cars that block texting while the vehicle is running. (2) Use technology such as Bluetooth headsets. The other solution would be like DWI’s, after the 2nd offense, suspension of driving privileges. With teenagers being the biggest offenders of texting while driving, we need to get their attention and help them understand the important issues at hand, “texting and driving takes lives.…

Besides having education as the solution, some believe that enforcement of laws should ban texting and driving. By doing so, society can wipe this problem right off. Laws will force drivers to stop texting based on the concept of consequences. Laws can strictly remove those who text while driving from the environment in which that driver is causing it to become unsafe unlike education. It’s a great idea for a solution; however, thinking deeper to the truth may convince otherwise. The reason why more laws will not work is because it has not been able to for years now. Some people think this issue is because of lack of laws. That is invalid because there has been laws restricting texting and driving. According to Kristin Marino, 10 states including D.C. prohibit all drivers from using handheld cell phones, 39 states and D.C. prohibit novice drivers from cell phone use, and 39 states and D.C. prohibit all drivers from text messaging. If the laws were truly the answer to this issue then why has it not been able to even cause a hint of improvement over the years? People also think that law will stop drivers from texting based on the concept of consequence. This is also false because in this situation, law is being used as punishment and according to Schacter, Gilbert, and Wegner, authors of Psychology 2nd…

A reason why texting and driving is a serious issue is because it causes a disproportionate amount of accidents every year. In 2012, 3,328 people were killed and 421,000 were injured in distraction-affected crashes (NHTSA). It’s a shocking realization that so many lives are taken every year over something that could have been simply avoided, yet the number of accidents still continue to rise. Part of the reason that so many lives are being taken away is because driving while using a cellphone is a distraction that can inevitably hinder…
