Terrell Owens
$200,000 per game, $3.5 million dollars base salary per year, $48.97 million for a 7 year contract that was signed only 1 year ago, that is what All-Pro wide receiver, Terrell Owens is losing "for conduct detrimental to a team." Controversy has always followed T.O., he was suspended (for one game) in 2000, by San Francisco's coach Steve Mariucci for his touchdown dance on the Dallas Cowboys' star logo. He had a heated dispute with Coach Reid, this summer and received a one week sit-out from training camp. Terrell turned that into a media circus by having his own mini camp & working out on his front lawn! His trouble this time came after he talked to the media in a negative way, about his team and the teams quarterback, Donovan McNabb. Terrell is upset, because when he scored his 100th career touchdown on Oct.23 in a win over San Diego, management didn't acknowledge it. He did receive his acknowledgment, even before he set foot on the field in the form of a paycheck. Yes, he is only the sixth player in NFL history to achieve that status, but isn't that why he got the big bucks? Should we be surprised by his actions? Not I, even though we are dealing with a man who is probably the best wide receiver in the history of football, he has never been made to be accountable for his actions, before now. His previous teams, the media and even the fans have always looked the other way and of course T.O. has his publicist to help smooth things over and even apologize for him. Sounds to me like a case of "SHOW ME THE

Upon the release of partial video footage of the assault the NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell, banned Rice for two games without pay and fined him $58,000. Many felt that this punishment was insufficient and this message was continued to be reinforced through constant media coverage on the matter. This then led to Goodell revising the league’s policy on assault, battery, domestic violence and sexual assault, instituting a six-game suspension for NFL personnel who violate the policy once, and a lifetime ban for those who do so twice. Although the revision seemed like a step in the right direction, what was to follow was like fuel to the fire for the media.…

Another possibility of how much a player makes could depend on what position they play or where they are on the depth chart. It would be too confusing and difficulty determining fairly the amount to pay each player. For example sophomore Cardale Jones from Ohio State University started off as a third string Quarterback then took over the starting spot replacing Junior first string Quarterback Braxton Miller and Freshman second stringer JT Barrett And won them a national championship. In saying that however the start going into the season was Braxton Miller who because of injury did not play a snap. Then Barrett was one of the best players in college football until he got hurt.…

They will also lose profit as many fans who condemn Hardy’s actions will choose to no longer attend Panthers games or purchase Panthers merchandise. However, those who support Hardy will continue to cheer on the team. It is likely the Panthers will lose corporate sponsorships by choosing this solution. This solution is also the least ethical - while it requires Hardy to perform community service and seek help, it mostly excuses and dismisses his behaviour. Keeping Hardy on the team will also help the team’s athletic success the most, but players who do not support Hardy due to his actions may be resentful and hesitant to play on the same team as…

As a result of no past suspension, Dennis Wideman deserves to be suspended, but with pay. People make mistakes and this is a mistake. The league made the right decision suspending him, but with without pay. When football first started as a sport, teams were being built around a tough, solid defense that would take pride in hitting players so hard that the ball would get pried loose causing a turnover. Now teams are forgetting about the hard hitting players and are drafting all-star receivers and deep throwing quarterbacks. Part of this is because of the media and part of it is because of the rulebook (Easterbrook). More and more people are starting to watch the NFL and because of that organizations are starting to care more about their fans…

Back then we did nothing. Suddenly he says he doesn’t want his girlfriend posing with black athletes on Instagram or associating with basketball legend Magic Johnson at Clippers games and we brought out the torches and rope with full force. Although both incidents are horrifically violent. Vick’s apology was more acceptable to the public than Tyson’s. Although both still are facing public scrutiny till this day, Michael Vick has repaired his image and has gained back plenty of new endorsement deals, including a former endorser Nike, and now is playing for the Eagles. Mike Tyson, however, is still seen as ignorant and has never boxed after the incident. Richard Sherman

As the wounded 49ers sulked back into the locker rooms, the victorious Seahawks ran rampant across the field, congratulating each other, and some doing interviews for the local and national press. Erin Andrews, a reporter for ESPN, managed to lasso the game’s hero Richard Sherman in hopes of a thorough break down of the prior play in which All-Pro cornerback, Sherman, athletically deflected a pass meant for 49ers reciever Michael Crabtree, resulting in an easy interception by the Seahawks. “I’m the best corner in the game!”, screamed Sherman. “Don’t you EVER talk about me!” Per Anderews request, Sherman made it clear that he was talking about the ‘sorry’ receiver, Crabtree. This rant was apparently fueled Crabtree rejection of Sherman’s handshake, and Crabtree’s ensuing shove to the head. Unbeknownst to Andrews and the 56 million people watching nationwide, the rant by the loud-mouthed Sherman would set off a media firestorm that challenged the barriers of race, aggression, and character.…

In his letter, Goodell wrote that the NFL “in recent years… [has] focused on protecting players from hits to the head and neck area. A new rule for 2013 prohibits any player… from hitting an opponent with the crown of the helmet outside of the tackle box…[as] the goal is to take the head out of the game” (Goodell). In a speech at Harvard in 2012, Goodell spoke about the changes needed in the NFL culture (Belson). By changes in the NFL culture, Goodell refers to changing the players’ attitudes so that they will reveal to trainers when they are truly hurt. If players would reveal when they are truly hurt instead of potentially playing in a game while having a concussion, many long-term injuries could be prevented (Belson). The issue regarding player honesty is one that is hard for the NFL to control. According to an AP report, the NFL has athletic trainers and team doctors on the sidelines that do all they can to ensure player safety, as well as an athletic trainer in the press box during games to point out possible concerns. The main reasons why many players do not report injuries are because they are afraid of losing their job along with future paychecks. If an NFL player loses his job and another player comes in and takes his place, the player with the injury could lose his job…
