Tennessee's Electric Cooperative Case Study
ELECTRIC COOPERATIVES: GOING BEYOND THE WIRES It’s Tuesday October 31st; today is Halloween and there will be so many houses decorated and lit up. Mrs. Tori dropped Cindy off at her best friend Amanda’s house so they could go trick-or-treating in the evening. Mrs. Tori is a member of Tennessee’s Electric Co-ops. “When I get older, I want to be a member and buy a co-op, like my mom,” said Cindy. Amanda didn’t know anything about Tennessee’s Electric Co-ops, so she didn’t seem interested. That evening Cindy and Amanda went doodling around the neighborhood gazing at the houses. That was one of their favorite things about Halloween besides the Candy. Cindy spotted the scariest house with the most light-up decorations, lights and monsters everywhere. “Did you know that, Tennessee’s Electric Cooperatives provide power to more than 1.1 million homes, farms, and businesses across rural and suburban Tennessee,” questioned Cindy? “You know I don’t know any of that stuff Cindy. Amanda was amazed by all the things she was learning about electric cooperatives and how much they have done for her home state. The cooperatives provided $94 million in payroll and benefits for Tennessee families. Cindy already knew most of these things since her mom owned a co-op and she knew she would be a future co-op owner as well. " I think it's so cool that our electric cooperatives are owned by the people that own it and not owned by the government," Amanda stated. It started to rain so hard the tv signal went away but the electricity didn't, the lights were still on. " You see Amanda this is the best Reliable, and affordable electricity ever," exclaimed Cindy! " You bet it is and you know what, when I'm older I'm going to buy a co-op as

In 1982, the McBride House was purchased by the last owners Chris and Cindy Black. When they first moved in, they started to notice a few strange things around the home. Heading downstairs to turn off the television, it went to dead silence. The TV was off, lights off, there was no one in sight.…

Sammy would always walk the long way home from school to avoid Billy and his gang who would throw rocks at him. He walked this way because it was past a large old house, and all of the other kids were scared of it. The House was two stories tall with a peaked roof that had holes in it. The High school kids had written graffiti on the sides, and the windows were all but shards of glass. The white paint was peeling off and the gray wood appeared behind it. The door to enter was open, and it seemed to look like a black hole, the shrubs and grass were so over grown they covered the bottom half of the house with all but the door covered.…

He went down to the office to get a tour he thought he didn’t need because he remembered every single solitary thing about this place. While the tour was going on everything going on was a blur. He looked left, right and left again, admiring the changes the school had made. “Wow” he sighed. “Is there a problem Rufus?” the tour guide asked. Rufus answered, “When I was here the wall paint was all chipped, there were broken windows and holes in the walls.” “Oh ok, well that concludes our tour and this door on your right is your first period class.” The tour guide replied. Rufus walked in and sat at an available seat at the back of the class room. He opened his notebook and took notes even though he didn’t understand anything that was going on. By the time 5th period came around it was time for lunch he was starving. All of his friends called him over and asked him to sit with him. The calling voices, even the number of dogs barking, could have been students on their way back to school, high-spirited in the bright, cold earliness of the year. Thinking back on the sounds, Carolee remembered a number of car doors being slammed, that swallow of air and report which made her smooth her hair automatically even if she wasn’t expecting anyone. But what caught her eye finally was what…
