The Role of the Teacher
Think about teachers whom you´ve had over your years as a student. Who was the best one? What were the qualities that set this individual apart from the others?
Who was your worst teacher? Why did this individual fail to set an example you would want to emulate as a teacher.
Can you think of some other terms to describe the good teacher and add to the list in section 1.2?
Out of all of my past teachers, my favorite was Mr. Gadberry from 4th grade elementary school. Some of the qualities that made him an extraordinary teacher were his preparation for really fun activities, his professionalism, his ability to make dull topics feel interesting to the students, and his overall patience as he corrected our mistakes. He certainly demonstrated the role of a prepared teacher.
The worst teacher I had was Mrs. Schafer, my art teacher from middle school. She was not actively engaged in her classes. She was rude to the students, and was always speaking in a patronizing voice when she corrected our mistakes. Her interaction with the students was very limited. She expected us to read and study the material, then explain what we had learned to each other, while she sat at her desk working on other duties. She did not feel approachable. While she had a deep understanding of the topics at hand, she used it in a way to show she is higher than her students, and never encouraged us or had an open mind when we wanted to make a suggestion. Overall, it just seemed like she didn't care about the students or our progress, which made me feel like I was abandoned and left to drown in a sea of hopelessness.
I would add to the list “High Expectations”. A teacher that has high expectations of their students will not settle with mediocrity when it comes to helping them learn and progress.
I would also add “Knowledge seekers” - someone who continues to increase their knowledge or education. I believe the more they learn, the more they can use to adapt to the
