'Teenage Wasteland' By Anne Tyler
Imagine getting a call from the school's principal saying your son is failing classes, doing drugs in the locker room, and drinking alcohol on school property. In the story “Teenage Wasteland” by Anne Tyler, Daisy is struck by the reality of her son Donny doing poorly in school. First your parents can not force you do well in school, the child has to make the decision on his own. “Donny was noisy, lazy, and disruptive.” Daisy gets a phone call from Donny’s principle telling her that her son is doing very poorly in school. Daisy starts to blame herself for Donny’s making the decision to not pay attention, and be disruptive in class. Even children with a strong household with two happily married parents could somehow end up troubled in the end, you just never know. “How invasive would a curricular intervention have to be to succeed in instilling a set of preferable values in those who currently feel so deeply alienated while at school?”(421). Miller is saying how far would the school have to go to all have the same values? It’s just not possible because everyone has there own values and beliefs.     What is the purpose of the Educational System? Should mankind really be oppressed by the predisposed standards that previous generations have set for the coming ones? Is it logical and fair to give children a set standard of 12 years of school, 6 classes a day, and five days a week?
