Overcoming Obstacles In Mark Salzman's 'True Notebooks'
Everyone will behave differently when they face adversity. Some of them might give up easily, or they fight with their courage instead of accepting adversity and tragedy. In True Notebooks, Mark Salzman shows us how the boys deal with obstacles. If those boys can’t overcome obstacles, obstacles overcome them. Therefore, they must persist in the end when they face adversity. Sometime, some of them are lucky to overcome obstacles by persisting in the end, but many of them can’t overcome obstacles because of the situation, or they don’t even want to overcome obstacles.
Overcoming obstacles is hard, and that causes us to give up easily. However, we might defeat obstacles if we keep persisting. Mark Salzman thought he would never teach well before he came to Juvenile Hall. He thought that was very difficult for those boys writing good writings due to their backgrounds. Also, he

Not every boy has the same luck like Mark Salzman. Many of them try to fight against obstacles, and many of them lose their hope when they fight against obstacles because they still lived at Juvenile Hall. For instance, Francisco is another boy at Juvenile Hall. He used to be a very bad boy, so the staffs that worked in the prison always said that he was a big troublemaker. However, he felt sorry about what he did to his mother. In order to pay for the Attorney's fee, his mother borrowed a lot of money from the others. Not only did she borrow the money, but she also sold out all her stuffs. This made Francisco feel guilty when he faced his mother. He wanted to carry her in his arms and cry. However, he said he would never do like that because he had to pretend that he was stronger that he had been before. He made sure that he won’t ever make his mother worry again. Therefore, he didn’t want to send his letter to his mother even though the whole writing class inspired him to send

By reading this book, I learned a lot about teenagers’ critical situations at juvenile hall. This book gave me a greater insight and deeper understanding of what their lives are like and the challenges they face in this place. I also learned that the legal system is not doing a great deal to help these young kids mend their lives. They are not being offered counseling or therapy which could help facilitate a great deal of things for them such as, getting a better orientation of a path for them to follow, dealing with the excessive amount of stress they face in a healthy way and learning tools for becoming effective members of society once they get out of that place. This book gave me a broader view of the factors that could have potentially contributed and played a big role in these teenagers getting engaged with gangs or committing these crimes. Most of these teenagers, to not say all, come from a very dysfunctional family where they were either battered by the father, had no positive role model to follow or no parents at all. Probably most of them joined gangs to feel they belonged to a group or where part of a family. I learned how miserable they feel by being in this place and the feelings they experience such as, loneliness, confusion, depression, no sense of personal worth and extreme stress. Many of them feel like they just want to die. All these feelings are not being managed by therapy or counseling but rather by just having regular nurses give them psych drugs which is very sad. I learned that these young kids are in great need of affection especially from their mothers and how much a compliment means to them. I also learned the importance of being tough as a survival skill in the prison setting. Many of these teenagers feel remorse for what they have done and would like to have a…

Adversity can bring out the positive and negative sides in a person. In “The Proof of Worth,” Edgar Albert Guest demonstrates how challenges in life can help someone understand what he or she is capable of during a hardship. Similarly, “The Importance of Adversity in Growth and Development” written by Patrick Kohan exemplifies how children will never learn how to conquer an obstacle if they are always given assistance. Furthermore, Laura Hillenbrand’s novel, Unbroken, indicates that experiencing problems can affect the way a person’s body reacts and thinks about a difficult moment. Ultimately, the authors highlight that obstacles can be a complex or helpful task, as well as benefit people in the future when they need to know their true talents.…

“Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” What the Roman poet Horace was saying was that when there is an obstacle in our way, our true colors will radiate. I could not agree more. When we as human beings feel passionate about achieving a goal, we may learn something new of ourselves, maybe a new trait that we did not know we possessed, when we reach new heights we did not know we could push ourselves towards. Challenges are similar to tests. Challenges are faced every day, but how we respond to them determines how strong we really are. Prime examples are superheroes and students that move dramatically.…

Challenges can influence the way a person thinks and understands a complicated situation. During life we all face many obstacles, and barriers while trying to achieve a goal. Even though we may not know what’s the opposite term for working toward a goal continuing to move forward even though you face obstacles or barriers we’ll were using a term know as persistence. As I work toward achieving my goal the I endured many barriers. Such as my physical ability to play sports, my knowledge for the game, & my parents working source. Obstacles and hardships are what shape a person. One of my many obstacles I had to face was getting use to my freshman year in high school. Due to me going to an Early college my freshman experience may have been a little different. Transitioning was one of the most difficult parts of the whole experience due to me not being able to really grasp what I had gotten myself into. My teachers were very firm in conducting their teaching strategies. I can recall a moment in time where I had turned in one of my first papers for my English class I was so excited for her to read it because I had worked all night on it trying to perfect it. A couple days passed and I got the paper back it was so many read marks on it if I didn't know any better I would…

Michael Jordan once said “Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” In these two novels the characters experience obstacles that force them to make difficult decisions. Their lives go from ordinary one day to unimaginable the next. In the world humans populate today, it is often seen how the obstacles sprung upon one are hard to overcome. Kazuo Ishiguro's two novels When we were Orphans and Never Let me Go provide one with a plan to overcome these problems. Clearly obstacles can be easily overcome by assessing the extremely tragic situation, accepting it and realizing all the good things present.…
