I would like to acknowledge my family and my daughter for their patience in bearing with me while I typed notes into the night and missed out on some of the family time and memories. Thanks for your love and forgiveness.
I would also like to thank Mrs Shobhana for her help and encouragement. It was when I was feeling the stress of completing my research that she encouraged me the most and helped me realize that I could do it. I would also like to thank Mr Rafiq of all his words of encouragement and commitment. Also I would like to thank Mr Niranjan for his unfailing dedication to getting me through this. His cheerfulness and support provided me with the confidence to get my research project done.

As you are listening to me, you might not think that this is the only major problem that students face today but it is serious. The problems students face today is probably more than anyone can imagine. Some problems are money, jobs, and studying; but, the main problem all students express is student debt. Student debt has been the number one source of problems today’s generation situates themselves with. This problem has been present since the late 1900s and has yet to be fixed. Students need to be aware of the source of their student loan problems in order to be aware of the dangers of being in debt at such a young age of their life. Student debt has become a problem for students during college because of the lack of financial education, escalating college tuitions over time, and the delay in financial commitments.…

Something that I hear on the FIDM campus constantly is students asking other students how they’re paying for school. It is evident by the answers most of them are dependent on their parents or relaying on the fact that they have to take out a student loan.…

Many students had limited understandings of credit cards, loans, and budgeting, and even fewer knew how to address employer healthcare plans, 401Ks, and other benefits choices. I pitched another idea to the Financial Services Office and the Georgetown Scholarship Program: a monthly financial literacy series to arm students with the skills necessary to make informed and effective financial decisions. The administrators approved the proposal, I worked with student groups and university offices to secure funding, and we invited professors and alumni to host workshops on budgeting, debt management, investing, and filing…

Imagine moving out of your parents’ place for the first time, and you’re on your own, not knowing how to create a budget nor understand what a 2% interest on a student loan means. With the increasingly difficult financial conditions brought on by recession and other fiscal challenges in the US and abroad, many schools believe that it is best for their students to understand the use of money by taking this class called financial literacy. Allowing students to have the option to take this class would be important and useful, even after graduation. By presenting my opinion using credible sources and opposing statements, Today’s society stresses the importance of finances in the real world, yet undermines the value of having financial literacy…

What’s worse? Stepping out into the world for the first time and your broke? Or stepping out into the world for the first time and you’re financially illiterate. One on hand, being broke is not quite bad. You can only go up. Success may come if you don’t let it pass you by. On the other hand, if you’re financially illiterate, you might as well be broke. Buying houses and cars, taking care of children, and paying off debts and loans are now your main priorities. But what if you don’t even know how to go about handling these situations? How would expect to lead an accomplished life? The answer if relatively simple: take a financial literacy class in high school. Making decisions while ignorant on the subject is never a good idea, you’ll make mistakes, get cheated and sound stupid. Also, the importance of financial literacy classes is the extensive aid it will give to teens stepping out into the real word for the first time. All in all, even with little personal knowledge about the financial and social economy, one would be one step away from making an arrangement that could ruin their lives.…

A survey was taken from a wide array of adults in America to answer the question: “If you take out a $1000 loan that has a 20% interest rate, how much will you owe a year in interest?”. A simple question that can be answered quickly with $200, however, two thirds of the people surveyed either could not answer the question or got it wrong (fortune). This survey was taken from a wide variety of people, including many college graduates, who should have easily answered this question. With this many people failing a simple question, there is evidence that high schools and colleges should require students to take a personal finance class so they can be financially literate in their lives.…
