Tank's War: A Short Story
The next day Allister called to invite Tank to drive over with him and speak with Pastor Jim. Willing to try one last time, he agreed.
Jim Watts had a smile as warm as the sun. He was well-tanned and somehow a little uncertain. Tank caught the essence of his features, but none of it, he held in his mind beyond an impression of astonishing piety. His long hair floated around him resembling a golden blanket. As he moved his hair danced as if in an unseen wind. His handsome features resembled a canvas that remains in memory for a long time.
His outer appearance seemed far from a figure, who would know anything about the military. That was until…
“Hooah,” the Pastor greeted the two men. Tank watched him with surprise. Was he a soldier or Marine?

“During those years you built a safety net around yourself to avoid discussing the issue of forgiving yourself.”
“How can that happen when God hasn’t forgiven me? I’ve prayed and confessed my actions in war as a sin. Still, the nightmares continue and I’m always sick.”
“Tank, the moment you sought forgiveness, the Lord granted it and that without condition. At that moment the Lord tossed your past into the sea of His forgetfulness. It is us who retains our sin through not knowing how to release it.
Certain wounds received in combat are clearly seen. An example of that is your back. I’m sure that over the year’s arthritis developed from the original wounds. They are badges of honor. There are also unseen wounds that you and I came back with. These are also badges of honor and we must learn how to live with them. We never forget, we just learn to live successfully with them.
If a veteran was sitting in a wheelchair on the street, wouldn’t we honor him? Yes, of course, we would. Don’t you find benefit from a wheelchair in secret, should we not honor you?”
Tank, looking confused

“How dare they? They are the ones with sin in their lives.”
“Still, Pastor, the Lord hasn’t taken away my pain and failures.”
“Listen, Tank, the Lord won’t let you walk through anything that He hasn’t given you the weapons to overcome. In the Bible when circumstances grew too tough, the Lord showed up with the miraculous. Sometimes the rescue mission came at the last-minute. I’m sure you experienced that in the service.”
“What can I do Pastor?” He hoped for a magic pill to take away the pain.
“There is no magic potion, Tank. We need to meet together every week to talk and pray together. Over time, you will discover the best way for you to live successfully with your memories. It’s different for every one of us. May I ask you a question to show you that no one can fix the pain immediately? It will show you if you are ready to talk it all out. What is your greatest fear-provoking memory?”
“Pastor, before we talk about that, I need time to process what we touched on today.”
Tank wasn’t ready to go there. Nor did he grasp the Pastor’s motive behind his question. He stood up signaling to Allister it was time to

From Clark’s observations, he seems intelligent and sympathetic as he reads scripture to the dead passengers. It is likely, also, that he can be charming and persuasive, since, in the beginning of his Prophetism, he probably could not use fear and violence as one man against many. However, he uses these qualities not to inspire and bring hope to defeated survivors, but to trap others into following his vision. Kirsten observes the Prophet’s coercion and notes of one of his followers that, “he was afraid, and the realization carried such sadness. I never wanted any of this.” (299) There is some satisfaction in this portrait, for it is this same, terrified boy that kills Tyler. The Prophet’s responsibilities as a leader, especially to his young followers, had been abandoned for power and influence. The credit which they may have naively assigned him, as children often do with authoritative adults, died along with each of their victims. This abuse of power and the betrayal to his followers exist on so grand a scale that they incite murder. Tyler’s death is a direct consequence of his actions, and his life is ended…

James Downing was part of the navy unit on pearl harbor. He was only 28 at the time and it was his 9th year in the navy. James remarked “I was doing my daily job, to find out that we were under attack.” James Downing was a gunner's 1st mate and postmaster. He was eating breakfast with a couple other service men. His wife, Morena, was cooking the breakfast. They were fine until they heard a few explosions go off. “Then an anti-aircraft shell landed right outside and blew a crater about 25 feet across,” Downing said, illustrating with outstretched arms. He did his duty and jumped into a truck with the other service men, but before they left his wife gave him a piece of paper with a verse of Scripture from Deuteronomy 33:27: “The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” Downing was going to rely on his training to stay alive and win this battle. It took them 20 minutes to get to the war zone, to see a devastating scene of ships sinking. “My first emotion was surprise, and the next thing was fear,” he said. “When I saw our ships, almost all of them, sunk there, I wondered, ‘What else are they going to do to us here?” James Downing was doing all he can to get the injured soldiers off the ships and fight the fires from the bombs. He was “The first Japanese I encountered was flying low and slow, so low you could almost see his eyes,” Downing said. Bullets from the plane whizzed near the top of his head, but Downing was not hit by the bullet. He was covered in oil and running from one chip to the next, Downing said he was overcome by a new emotion every time. Lt James Downing said” There were lots of heroic risk taken by many soldiers to save others lives. They were many heroes that day, that died trying to save…

“Where the hell is the armor?” I remember asking myself as I lumbered up into the open back of a Humvee with canvas doors. By the looks on the squad and translators’ faces, they were asking themselves the same question. These days we kept our questions to ourselves, asking questions was not in the job description. Our job, at all times, was to do what we were told and do it fast. You see, up until this point we had traveled in the relative safety of our Amphibious Assault Vehicles, AAVs, or tractors as we referred to them. 8 to 10 men with weapons crammed into a space about the size of an average bathroom, an average bathroom packed with crates of thousands of rounds of ammunition, grenades, anti-armor…

The book then unfolds on demonstrating a strong understanding of the individual’s feelings and emotions. He empathizes that counselors should be aware of themselves before counseling others on any situation. Since Dr. Wright uses biblical passages as examples in ministering others, he recommends that ministers use Jesus as an example on treating a crisis or trauma victim. He teaches to ministers that once the advice is given, it cannot be taken back. The individual is going through a traumatic event and if the words aren’t chosen correctly, it could have a drastic impact on their life. Counseling those in need require one to provide the individual with unconditional love and hope. Showing…
