Marine Corps Boot Camp 2

As I enjoyed one last moment of freedom, a large gray school bus pulled up along side of the curb where myself and about 55 other men were waiting to enter into an unknown world. As we boarded the bus the female bus driver told us all to; “hurry up, sit down, and put our head between our legs. I want no looking around and absolutely no talking!” At that point an awkward silence passes throughout the bus, all you could hear were the frightened breaths of the men sitting around. Suddenly the bus came to an abrupt stop next to a building where the sounds from a broke down air conditioning unit made an already panicked moment even more uneasy. As we sit there in silence, time seemed to stand still for it felt like hours before anything happened. Out of know where a stocky Marine, hard-muscled and erect, his face shadowed by the brim of his olive-green campaign cover, climbed into the bus. “On behalf of Major General
Osman, Commanding General of the Recruit Depot, I welcome you to San Diego. When I tell you to get off the bus, hit the pavement running until each of you is standing tall on the yellow footprints. Understand?” This is where 55 unshaven, badly postured, long haired men stood rigidly at attention awaiting orders from
Staff Sergeant Allen. Staff Sergeant Allen yells, “now, listen up, and listen good. Up ahead lies hope, that you’ll endure the rigors of boot camp and earn the title of
United States Marines. The first words of encouragement into the journey of the next 13 weeks of a long and painful transition from Civilian to Marine. To ensure America’s protection and freedom, the United States Marine Corps requires new recruits to undergo strenuous mental and physical training and tests. It all begins through “The Gates of Hell,” at the Marine Corps Recruit

All new recruits were properly trained from experienced Republican Guard cadres who provided defensive strategies, movement methods, and other battlefield combat techniques. According to a U.S. Marine Corps study, “they were able, in effect to start from scratch, taking fresh recruits and training them in the required doctrines. They were able to complete the entire cycle of training up to and including brigade level exercises. As they began operational training for the final campaign, their use of mock-ups—upon which entire divisions trained repeatedly—was highly effective. These final training exercises validate the virtue of training on "real ground" for solving the problems of synchronization of movement and fire.” (U.S. Marine Corps,…

My stop was in downtown, so I walked out. I was puzzled. Who were these strange people? I sensed the divide between me and the bus passengers socially, culturally, and physically. Ultimately, there was nothing in my past experience in my high school environment that could prepare me for the bus ride, which made me feel awkward and tense. I became conscious of my mannerisms and how I carried myself. For once, I felt like a stranger.…

    Burning Question

I looked through many sources for this assignment; talked to a recruiter, discussed what my cousins went through in their own paths, studied the Marine Corp. website and etc. The source that I found most drawn to was the website; it answered all my questions whenever they popped into my head and answered questions I didn’t even have. The convenience of a website now is at your hands any time because of technology and I defiantly utilize this. The biggest question from my burning question was is this for me? I wondered that because every source I found said that Marines or any branch of the Army is not for everyone. The next information I looked for was how can I prepare myself so I succeed in whatever comes my way physically and mentally? Finally I asked what it is going to be like to make a career out of becoming a Marine.…

The Marine Corps historical characteristics after the Civil War could be based in part on survivability and the need for the Marine Corps to prove its worth to the United States as a Military Force. The Marine Corps part in the Civil War had been small and not altogether impressive. Both the Army and the Navy did not regard the Marine Corps as useful. This paper will in effect touch on the Marine Corps history from after the Civil War to World War I. It will then converge on a discussion with regards to the fight against the disestablishment of the Marine Corps. (Simmons/Moskin 1998)…

In the early 1980's under the direction of the Chief of Staff of the Army, the Honorable John O. Marsh, The Army Physical Fitness School was created. The school was designed to enhance physical fitness training within the Army by producing knowledgeable physical fitness trainers that were tasked to create a program designed to standardize the way physical fitness training was conducted throughout Army units. Over the course of the next several decades; the Army Physical Fitness School would face several challenges and be forced to overcome major changes within the organization, from being defunded, changing geographical locations, and changing major commands several times, the program would persevere and be recognized as a force multiplier…

Going to Basic Military Training for the United States Air Force was a life changing experience. It started with the intense dramatic change in my personal lifestyle. From living comfortably at my parent’s house, eating whatever I want to eat and being able to visit with friends and family on my own time. To being stripped of my own name and identity, only to be referred to as “Trainee”, losing all of my luxuries and freedoms I once took for granted. However I was not in it alone. Forty-nine other trainees were a part of my flight. They were like family for those eight and a half painfully long weeks. We struggled day by day together working as a team to achieve our goal of graduating and becoming proud Airmen of…
