Effects of Ethanol in the Society Ethanol, also called ethyl alcohol is a volatile, flammable, colorless liquid. The largest single use of ethanol is as a motor fuel and fuel additive. Ethanol is considered to be better for the environment than gasoline. It is a renewable source of energy and it has been seen as a promising alternative to fossil fuel consumption. However, there are some negative aspects in the production and usage of this fuel. It is considered to be inefficient and it indirectly affects the environment too. The United States produces a quarter of the world’s total carbon emissions, and American’s per capita emissions are five times the world average. More than 25 percent of manmade emissions of carbon dioxide in the U.S. are from transportation. Light duty vehicles, sport utility vehicles (SUVs), minivans, and other light trucks are prolific carbon dioxide emitters. Using renewable fuels in transportation can help reduce the air pollution associated with burning petroleum. Compared to gasoline, ethanol made from corn is estimated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20-30 percent. Moreover, ethanol from cellulose – made from the stalks, stems and leaves of plants reduce it by about 85 percent or more. Mohideen 2 The environmental impacts of farming practices can also be reduced with the adoption of sustainable production methods in the agricultural sector. Growing corn, wheat, rice, and sugarcane produces large amounts of agricultural wastes, some of which are burned, degrading air quality. In the production of cellulosic ethanol, the bulk of the biomass would become a valuable source of energy rather than a waste product. In fact, municipal solid waste (MSW) includes a large volume of cellulosic material that has the potential to be converted to ethanol. The economic benefits will include additional and more diversified markets for both grain and

    Alcohol based fuels are used as alternatives to fuels that come entirely from non-renewable resources. The most common of these are ethanol and methanol. These two substances have a few similarities, but also significant differences. Bush, 2006 State of the Union Address. In the past five years we have seen the devastating effects of our dependency on foreign oil. The average price of a crude barrel of oil has steadily increased and nearly tripled from $23 in 2001 to $60 in 2006. To combat this problem our government has come up with two ways to decrease our dependency on foreign oil, and become less subjective to OPEC. The first way is to increase the amount of oil we produce in the United States. Relaxing some of the government restrictions on oil drilling would help promote more production, such as the Bush Administration’s proposal to open some of the Artic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling. Unfortunately relaxing government regulations in any industry can be a very slow political process. The other way to reduce our dependency on foreign oil is to find alternative sources of energy. This seems to be a solution that is supported in almost all political realms. In this list of alternative energy sources is Ethanol. Ethanol is a combustible substance that exists in small amounts in about one third of the gasoline sold in the United States. Many domestic vehicles have flex fuel engines that will run on gas that is up to eighty-five percent ethanol. The good thing about ethanol is that it can be refined out of products like corn or sugar. Because ethanol is a legitimate alternative to traditional fossil fuel, support for ethanol producers in the United States is very high.     Ethanol was first used in 1908 on Henry Ford's Model T. The Model T was designed so that it could be run on either gasoline or pure alcohol. When asked why he wanted to run the Model T on alcohol, Henry Ford replied by saying, “It is the fuel of the future.” The use of ethanol continued through the 1920's and 1930's in an effort to keep a United States ethanol program alive. Although the effort was unsuccessful, oil supply problems in the Middle East and environmental issues and concerns on the use of lead as an octane booster in gasoline brought focus back on to ethanol in the late 1970's. Ethanol production in 1998 was at 1.4 billion gallons compared to 175 million gallons in 1980. The Arab Oil Embargo of 1973 made a contribution to an economic crisis that revealed our dependence on imported oil. Lines at gas stations lengthened, stock markets slowly started to decline, and our nation was faced with an economic recession. Congress then passed the Energy Tax Act of 1978. This act provided made the 4 cents to the gallon federal fuel tax on gasoline exempt if the fuel was 10 percent ethanol. Congress continued to show and reveal Acts to promote fuel development in the domestic sector and energy conservation. Through the Clean Air Amendments of 1990, Congress acknowledged changes in fuels and their composition would contribute to reducing exhaust pollution. Two new gasoline standards were put into place to reduce fuel emissions in the polluted areas of our country, with an emphasis on that of cities.
