Symphonie Fantastique, Hector Berlioz
By carefully listening to the first movement of the symphonic work, this could be a work all on its own. Berlioz really did a fantastic job by incorporating all the sort of feelings a man in love gets by seeing the love of his life for the first time. “Reveries – Passions” is the title of the first movement, which depicts the feelings of tenderness, sad, crazy, and passionate, all through this one device, idee fixe. The idee fixe technique is used to bring out the theme of the piece several times in different characteristics to attain the various feelings for Berlioz throughout his work. In just the first movement, the theme came out at least three different times in various points of the piece. One of my favorite sections of the first movement had to be after the repeated section, the strings move in contour, up and down exactly a halfstep each time in order to reach a

I believe it is in rondo form for the theme keeps coming out, as a sort of ABACADA type of movement. Now, I can see why this symphonic work is one of the best out there; it really requires a great ensemble. I feel this last piece was in fact a good replication of how Berlioz in the end felt for Harriet and how their marriage was a terrible disaster years later. But there was perhaps speculation on whenever or not Berlioz was an Opium addict and that these last two movements really depicted how he felt. Nevertheless, it was a great piece and always a pleasure to listen; I can now understand why this movement is a required standard orchestral repertoire. That twenty bar phrase of just sixteenth notes and sextuplets, has to be devastating and also requires a lot of attention. Oh, and you might want to have a cheap bow if you are a string player; you do not want to ruin the wood on a good bow in the section that says, frappez avec le bois de

    The first movement of the composition begins with a solo from only the strings family. A soft, consistent melody is played and the violin dominates the other instruments in this piece. The tone color at the beginning of this piece is relatively light which symbolizes the characteristics of a nuturing mother. As expected from a classical piece, the dynamics of the piece suddenly change, and there is a slight crescendo in the piece during the following measures of the composition. The tempo of the composition grows quicker in pace which portrays another chapter in the story, signalizng another movement of the piece. A violinist them performs a solo that plays alot that is also quick, yet play alot on the concept of pitch. It can be heard that the violin goes from very low ranges to fairly high range in pitch to emphasize the great amount of emotion in the piece.…

    The orchestras played this piece to create a great closing to the concert. The conductor made a great decision to arrange this song to be at the end giving almost a sense of closure. The addition of the percussionist again helped give the piece the nice lifted feeling, as well as help the orchestra stay together; however the dynamic contrast between the four sections was rather light.The use of a snare drum drastically changed this piece, it feels more like a slow waltz. The little use of dynamics, however, kept the melody from popping out as much as it should have. In the beginning of the piece everybody played the notes with space between then; however towards the end, a few of orchestra members played the notes smoothly and connected whereas the rest of the orchestra played the notes spaced. The intonation and a steady tempo was retained throughout the performance which gave this piece a focused tone. The violins and violas did an excellent job using full bows, but the cellos needed to use long bows so they can create a deep, rich, and crisp sound.     To introduce the piece two cadenzas inspired by the same melody are performed over a continuous subtle harmony. The piece begins with sustained chords between the string instruments and wind instruments. This gives a relaxed effortless tone to the piece and resembles the calmness and tranquillity of a spring day in England. The violin then enters imitating the lark. The violin plays an ascending pattern with elongated arpeggios. The chords underneath drop out so the violin plays a solo introducing the first theme. The orchestra is quietly introduced and develops the almost folk like motif. A folk dance theme is then introduced led by the clarinet and flute and woodwinds as the solo cadenza is repeated. The full orchestra then comes in however it is still fairly restrained to imitate the English countryside. There is antiphonal exchange between the solo violin playing a trill and then the woodwinds imitating the bird like call. This is followed by the solo violin playing a series of cadenzas over the orchestra which could represent the lark flying over the countryside and rolling hills. The shorter cadenza for the soloist is fairly contrasting in comparison to the rest of the piece. There are two separate melodies competing with one another yet also mimicking each other. There is…

    It was not first time to hear it but was first time to see the performance at the concert. It consists of five parts and is also immensely popular and famous because it was made by F .Schubert. As the name is The Trout, I felt the piano sound was fresh and animated as if trout was swimming lively from the first movement. When hiking the mountain and seeing the water of a brook, we can feel being full of life, animation and restfulness. I felt just like when I see the water of a brook and could even imagine the figure of trout. In the first movement, Allegro Vivace, the four instruments made harmony slowly based on the piano sound and, especially, the violin and cello stood out clearly. The powerful sound of the cello by Lorie Kirkell was so great and played a role as bridge. I was impressed by a merit of cello sound again and again. The second movement, Andante, was so lyrical melody that I could feel stability and richness like I had lived in village and been satisfied with my life; in addition, The three of the violin, viola and cello melodies definitely showed to advantage. I personally would like to listen to the music with lyricism because it radiates feeling of relaxation.
