Symbolism In The Shifty Sort
In this story, there are multiple different symbols - all of which hold the ability to lead the readers into deep thoughts and realizations. There are small moments that turn into symbols when looked at correctly, there are character point of views that symbolize different things, and, finally, there is the symbolism of Zach and Cammie’s relationship (previously mentioned in “The Shifty Sort”). Let’s take a closer look, starting with small moments.
One small moment is the mere fact that the language of Farsi is used frequently. Often, when characters are speaking in a foreign language, the author chose Farsi. Farsi is a language used in the Middle East. When more deeply considered, the current events there (and relationships with other countries) related to what Gallagher Girls face every day. It seemed as if the author was trying to make this language a symbol of how difficult spy girls’ lives are. This could symbolize several things. For one, it could again symbolize how spies’ lives are. They have legends (fake stories of their lives) over legends over legends. Not everything they do is true. Another thing this could be symbolizing is love. It could be trying to tell us that love fluctuates, but it lasts. Cammie and Zach part on good terms, very much in love and very much in denial. One last thing that this relationship could be telling us is the fact that first impressions aren’t always true: if Cammie had gone with her first impression of Zach, then he would still be generally hated by her (and therefore by the readers, since this book is told in 1st perspective).
