Supportive Learning Environments
Supportive learning environments can be defined as:
“The creation of a caring, rigorous and relevant learning community that provides support to all learners in aiding them to achieve at their highest potential”(Holtz Frank, 2004).
“Unless students experience a positive and supportive climate, some may never achieve the most minimum standards or realize their full potential”.Urban (1999)
For any training it is important to set up rules and boundaries at the start of the training. This gives the learners and idea of what is expected from them. Tell them the consequences too. It is important that if someone breaks the rules then we deal with it and don’t just leave it.
An Example can be:

If someone has an opinion that is different to yours you will listen calmly to their opinion and not get angry.
All learners must be treated throughout the training with respect and dignity and the teacher must not allow any personal feeling to interfere with treating everyone the same.
Examples of supportive and unsupportive behaviour are:
Supportive Unsupportive
Using encouragement No praise or insincerity, rolling eyes at answer
Providing constructive feedback Allowing learners to think they have given a right answer when they are wrong or mocking incorrect answers
Setting objectives and ensuring those objectives are met Set unclear objectives or the learning does not follow the set objectives
Participation from learners Teacher does all the talking whilst everyone sits and listens for the entire training
Not allowing any one person to disrupt the rest of the group One person allowed to disrupt the training and other people
Not allowing others to bully to be disrespectful of others Allowing learners to make of fun others or the trainer
No to single out any one person and make them feel “on the spot” If people are quiet or seem to be uncomfortable speaking up, make them answer direct questions and put them on the

    It is essential that ground rules should be laid out from the outset of every new course with the learners. These ground rules are the basic normal operating procedures that are in place from session to session, that the learners adhere to. For a tutor these ground rules include; the greeting and welcoming of the learners, basic health and safety aspects i.e. fire procedures and other emergency procedures, where clothing and accessories are to be kept. Also, mobile phones and other communication tools are to be switched off or on vibrate, no food substances or hot beverages are to be consumed in session time (unless otherwise agreed i.e. in the case of a medical condition such as Diabetes). Duration and frequency of breaks and acceptable levels of comfort breaks during session time are to be agreed and adhered to also. All students will abide by the non-smoking policies of the facility, and if desired use the designated area for smoking, and of course what the course syllabus and content entails, also encompassing what the assessment details/procedures will be and at what stages through the term time or session duration. Also, an explanation of the course certification and validation will be given. I think one of the best ways to install and reinforce some of these ground rules is to get the learners themselves involved, especially when it comes to agreed and acceptable time limits for lateness, either at session start time or after break times. It should also be noted that learners should encourage one another and to allow everyone to have a voice and to be heard.…

    Albert Einstein, a famously mediocre student, once commented that "It is little short of a miracle that modern methods of instruction have not completely strangled the holy curiosity of inquiry." Many educational theorists and gifted teachers have taken this to heart and endeavored to create learning environments that reflect innovations that are both intuitive and ingenious. This paper shows, that, unfortunately, we often see these same innovations stifled at the high school level. Whereas the elementary grades have always been seen as a test market for innovation and have led to such new methodologies as multimedia education, the use of role play, and a team approach to the comprehension of new subject matter, the high school environment is seen as a sacred cow where entrenched methodologies are not to be tampered with. The paper argues that, from a sociological perspective, high schools serve to propel a community's best students to the university level where they will ultimately develop professional characteristics that will allow them to return value to their home town or city. Yet, the paper shows, that from a pragmatic perspective, administrators are quick to replicate methodologies that are proven to effect a positive result in measurable terms. In a good school, these measures could consist of SAT scores and the caliber of university placement; in a struggling school, administrators must insure that students are able to pass basic state tests and that drop-out rates remain low. The paper argues that, while these goals are admirable and in some respects immutable, they only serve to underscore the need for innovations designed to enhance the learning environment.
