Only Depressed People Commit Suicide, or Are There Other Reasons? I conclude there are plenty of other reasons associated with suicide. Suicide has been prevalent amongst human kind ever since the intelligent humans. Suicide is not necessarily a bad thing in some cultures, at least throughout the past. Many suicide were culture-specific, based more on the idea of sacrifice for a common good. Such practices are not as prevalent today, yet still are seen from time to time. Araj’s study aimed to conclude the motivation for Palestinian suicide bombers, between 1993 to 2006. Interviews were conducted with close families of 42 randomly selected Palestinian suicidal bombers. Conclusions included reasons of desire for revenge against Israeli forces, religious inspiration, and desire for liberation of the homeland. Not directly the purpose, but nonetheless, the study supports that other factors influence suicide other than depression. If anything, the Palestinian suicide bombers reflect emotion contrary to depression, instead filled with pride and glory for their nation and culture. Biologically, they don’t have any mental illness (or mental illness relating to suicide). Psychologically, they are acting on what they believe is write, and for what they believe will socially benefit their people. Doctors Brugnoli, Novick, Maria Haro, Rossi, Bortolomasi, Frediani, and Borgherini, published their findings in BMC Psychiatry on the risk factors for suicide behaviors in the observational schizophrenia outpatient health outcomes (SOHO) study. The article follows a three year, multinational follow-up study to identify the risk factors of suicide in schizophrenic patients. 8,871 adult patients with schizophrenia were chosen for the study, and were compared by suicide behavior and if they eventually followed through with killing themselves. 384 patients ended up committing or attempting to commit suicide. Again not the goal of the study, but again nonetheless shows suicide is not solely caused by depression. Of the highly schizophrenic patients, 4.34% committed suicide due to their schizophrenic illnesses. Schizophrenia does not often lead to suicide, with depression still leading the cause, but the mental disorder can still account for a notable sum of suicides, thus again affirming the presence of other causes of suicide outside of simply
