Paul returns to the camp, where he first was trained by Himmelstoss. But he only knows a few people there. On the days he trains his refreshing military drill training and in the evenings he reads a lot. One time he looks around and notes the beautiful nature and how the nature and the colors change between the seasons. Next to Paul’s camp there is a camp with Russian prisoners. They are all really hungry and fearful. Some soldiers are nice and give them food, but others treat them just like enemies. Paul can feel their pain and how horrible they have to life. Paul got soft inside, because he had to see all these terrible things so far in the war. The last Sunday before Paul goes back to the front his sister and father visit him. There …show more content…
Winston is a 39 year old, small and thin man. Everywhere in Airstrip One, Oceania, the face of Big Brother, the leader of the Party appears on giant and colorful posters. The capture is “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU”. In Oceania in every public and private room there are telescreens installed so the Big Brother is literally always watching you. Winston works for the Ministry of Truth as an editor. There are four big Ministries The Ministry of Peace, Ministry of Love, Ministry of Plenty and the Ministry of Truth. The three slogans of the party are: War is peace, Freedom is slavery and Ignorance is strength, which are shown on the buildings. In Winston’s apartment there is one alcove, which the telescreen cannot see so Winston starts writing a diary. This is against the law in Oceania. While he is sitting in his chair he thinks about how Emmanuel Goldstein, the Party’s leader and enemy flashes across the telescreen many times a day. “ Down with Big Brother” even before he wants to write it down he knows he is doing something really bad and he knows he is going to die in a painful way, because thinking about doing something wrong is not

At the beginning of the book, it seemed as if Winston was battling his own mind to try and find out what he really wanted. Winston indulged in a secret relationship with a party member Julia, they lasted quite a while in the relationship thinking they were not going to be caught, this became history the moment they were caught by O’brien who had known about this affair because he had been watching winston for 7 good years. He made sure Winston was taken to the ministry of love where he was tortured, in order to give up his belief about Big Brother and the party. Winston was an adamant individual even with the torture, he refused to give up his ideas. Before taking winston to room 101 he stated that “There are three stages in his reintegration”, ‘there is learning, there is understanding and there is acceptance”. it is time for you to move on to the second stage. Room 101 is a torture room in the ministry of love in which prisoners are subjected to his or her own worst nightmare, for winston, his fear was that of rats, o’brien stressed the fact that “they will leap onto your face and bore straight into it, sometimes they attack the eye first, sometimes they burrow through cheeks and devour the tongue”. Terrified by the image of the scene presented to him by o’brien, which may likely seem to become the end of him, he saves himself by denouncing julia subjecting to the laws of the party he also accepted the principle that 2+2=5. As a result of this experience, winston loses all rebellious thought and replaced it with undiluted love for the party.…
