In the novel, 1984, Winston recognizes in his diary that the Party and the Thought Police never consider the Proles dangerous. Winston acknowledges that Proles outnumber both the Thought Police and the Party in general making them a potential threat to the Party. The Party also underestimates the Proles’ ability to pose a threat to the Party. The Proles also are not subjected to Party indoctrination allowing Proles to have the option if they want telescreens or not giving them a large extent of freedom from the interference of the Thought Police, because the Thought Police are always monitoring the comrades at all times unless it is in the dark. At the same time, the Proles are too patriotic and ignorant to look at the big picture of the Party. The Proles are too ignorant to realize the larger evils of the Party because the Proles are easily manipulated “all that was required was a primitive patriotism which could be appealed to whenever it was necessary to make them accept longer working hours or shorter rations."…

Winston wants to rebel against the party, however his desire is impossible to achieve in a totalitarian setting, which is the world of Nineteen Eighty-Four; societal regulations in Nineteen Eighty-Four help to prevent potential dissenters from needless struggle and pain. Winston understands that the party’s structure is reinforced in several ways that make it incredibly strong, and impossible change in his lifetime. Just like Lizzie, O’Brien warns Winston that, “there is no possibility that any perceptible change will happen within [their] own lifetime,” and by rebelling, “[they] are the dead” (Orwell 203). However, just like in Goblin Market, Winston ignores the possibility of death, in pursuit of his own desires. He rebels and breaks the…

The first conflict would be individuality. Why? Well, Winston would always try to convince himself that he will not be one of the rest. With the “down with big brother”page eighteen .This quote would represent the anger that Winston feels against big brother wanting to bring him down so it would be all over with. The fact, that everybody has to dress up in the party uniform. Everybody is tricked into believing the lies and propaganda of the Ministry of Truth. if you choose to be an individual as Winston wanted to so, you would be sent to Room 101, get re-educated, and wiped out of existence. Winston knew that everything the party said was a bunch of crap and that the Proles was his only chance at freedom. As the end comes Winston has completely lost his individuality, and has lost his identity and meaning. Winston is worse off in the end of the novel because he has lost his meaning.…

Eminem sings the lyrics, “I'm not afraid, To take a stand, Everybody, Come take my hand, We'll walk this road together.” These lyrics describe Winston and Julia’s relationship, because they rebelled against the government by forming a unwanted relationship. They also rebelled against the government by swearing into the Brotherhood. Winston and Julia were not afraid to take a stand against the government. They said they are willing to do anything including killing innocent people, and giving up their own lives. The only condition they did not agree on was splitting up. The act of swearing in to the Brotherhood showed that Julia and Winston were not afraid of Big Brother, and they were willing to do whatever came their way. Winston also mentioned throughout the novel that “if there is hope..it lies in the Proles.” Winston believed that the Proles have a shot at overthrowing the party, because they make up 85 percent of the population. The song “Not Afraid” relates to his idea, because if the Proles decided to rebel against the party he would be willing to take their hand and go through the challenges they could possibly…

As mentioned above, Winston was finally defeated. He can no longer think or act for himself, just how “The Party” wants their people to be. Winston looked up at a picture of Big Brother and felt loyal to him and “The Party”. Unfortunately this quote shows how “The Party” is undefeated and ultimately destroyed him. Winston was no longer capable of being his own person he was now who “The Party” wanted him to be. He was no longer himself. I believe in ending the story this way, Orwell shows how much power and strength totalitarianism has over…

Winston often faces a dilemma about who he pledges his allegiance to. His rebellious nature tells him to believe in Goldstein and to love him. On the other hand, Winston also finds it hard to rebel due to the power of the Party. This quote exemplifies this conflict inside of Winston. During the two-minute hate, Winston joins the crowd in booing at the screen but he also finds himself thinking about how Goldstein isn’t the bad guy in this society. This shows one side of Winston, the rebellious “you can’t control me” Winston. The other side of Winston is seen when his, “secret loathing of Big Brother turned into adoration.” This side of Winston admires the Party and Big Brother because of the amount of power they wield. Though the party is not…

Winstons statement is vague and must be properly addressed before we can access its validity. The word hope in itself is deliberately ambiguous as Winston fails to mention what this hope is for. Winston may be talking about hope of revolution and the overthrow of government as a horse shaking flies. For this there is ultimately almost no hope in the proles due to the futility expressed in the novels ending as even our socially aware narrator succumbs to the guile of Big Brother. However, much more than this Winston may be talking about hope for the future, hope for freedom from social oppression and the dictatorial regime of the Party, hope for the end goal of this revolution. Winston writes this statement having just described the way in which the Party has manipulated sex, one of the basest human instincts according to Freud, into a joyless act and attempts to eliminate the orgasm. The freedom from this sort of tyranny is far more within the reach, and to some extent is already available, to the proles. The proles, superficially, have far more tangible freedom than the party members since they are able to indulge in their own activities during free time which party members are not permitted. The proles are less vigorously monitored by the Thought Police or party officials and in theory are allowed to live as they please. However, in theory, the party members are too allowed to live as they please though the reality is very different as will be discussed later.…

In the beginning Winston goes against the law and secretly buys a journal to write in, even though if he is caught he will be taken away forever. He would have to face Big Brother, but Winston was willing to take the chance. Many times he reads throughout the novel “ War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength”. Which is the official saying of the Party. While attempting to write in the journal Winston found himself only being able to write “Down with Big Brother” repeatedly. He always found himself confused on what to do but always believed that he would never conform into one of them!…

A shrill trumpet call had pierced the air. It was the bulletin. Victory. It always meant victory when a trumpet call preceded the news. He could hear just enough of what was issuing from the telescreen to realize that it had happened as he had foreseen. A vast seaborne armada secretly assembled. A sudden blow in the enemy’s rear. The white arrow tearing across the tail of the black. Under the table Winston’s feet made convulsive movements. He had not stirred from his seat, but in his mind he was running, swiftly running. He looked up again at the portrait of Big Brother. The colossus that bestrode the world. The rock against which the hordes of Asia dashed themselves in vain. Much had changed in him since that first day in the Ministry of Love,…

The first line starts of with "Folly, Folly" which is a repetition of the word twice. The word folly basically means the trait of acting stupidly or rashly. This depicts the protagonist 's emotions towards his opponent which is the Big Brother. The word folly could be used as a repetition to convey Winston 's confusion on who to blame for their stupidity. Either his frustration for the Party for dominating, controlling and shutting various paths in his life. The repetition of the word could depict Winston feeling petrified for what yet he 's planning to commit. In the passage his heart kept saying, "conscious, gratuitous, suicidal folly" which all means that he is aware that his act is without cause and is exceptionally risky. His heart is repeating these words which convey that Winston 's heart belongs to the dominating party. Winston is already transformed into a sincere controlled member of the party in which his emotions are determined by the Party 's strict rules which dominate his life. This foreshadows what occurred at the end in which he had to surrender to the Party because his heart already belonged to the Party from the utmost beginning.…

This happens to be one of the points that is related to the book and our government now: torture. In the book they torture you so bad that you would wish the pain you were going through was on someone else. Rather endure the pain yourself you would wish it was done on someone else. Winston’s torture consisted of a person asking him numerous questions. He would choose to answer them of go through a series of electric shocks going through…
