Summary Of The Cask Of Amontillado
Fortunato’s Version

I was at the carnival one evening, having a splendid time when I ran an acquaintance of mine. Montresor seemed delighted to see me. I felt guilty, since the last time had seen Montresor I had insulted him greatly. Despite this, Montresor was incredibly kind to me. I greeted him enthusiastically hoping to make up for what I did.
It caught me off guard when he said he received a pipe of amontillado. Even a skilled person like myself had a hard time finding such a wine on a good day but to be able to obtain a whole pipe of it during a carnival was quite impressive. “How?” I told him. “Amontillado? A barrel? Impossible! Not to mention, in the middle of a carnival!”
“I am not sure if it is real,” he said.
Then he told me

The mood expressed throughout the short story “The Cask of Amontillado” is suspense. This mood can be applied to this tale specifically in the scenes of when the two men venture into the catacombs and when Montresor reveals a trowel from underneath his cloak. Edgar Allen Poe creates the first mentioned scene to be rather suspenseful because when the two men, Montresor and Fortunato, venture into the catacombs Montresor frequently mentions that they should turn around and return to the carnival due to the appearance of the niter. Montresor prompts Fortunato about returning to the carnival because he doesn’t want Fortunato to become suspicious of his true intentions. He believes that if he allows Fortunato the choice to continue or go back he…

It was one of the best nights in a long time. There I was looking at the most beautiful girl I had ever laid eyes on. I was truly the luckiest guy in all of the earth. Pearl was not only the sweetest woman I had ever met, but, also the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. Sure we had our ups and downs but in the end we loved each other and that was all that mattered. There was nothing standing in the way of us. Well, maybe one thing… or should I say person… Fortunato. You see, Fortunato was a rich man, richer than I’d ever be. His family pretty much owned the town and everything in it. He would always confront my girlfriend telling her about how happy he could make her and the wonderful life they could have together. I knew that this was true. Whenever I would ask pearl about him she would tell me not to worry and explained how she would never love him. These words would relieve me for short periods until the next time I heard of him addressing her. Fortunato was also a very persistent man and was not used to being told no to having things he wanted. Once he caused a ruckus so big I thought a war might break out. I feared that his endurance and his liking for my mistress would not benefit me at all and for this I was worried.…

It was in the middle of carnival season. The music was blasting loudly to conciliate the moment of such a wonderful occasion. Keeping my head up, I looked around. There were people dancing, swaying their body in time with the music. Others were sipping on their drinks lightly, smooching and chit-chatting with each other. It was then I spotted Fortunato who was wearing a belled suit, enjoying himself at the carnival festivities. He was speaking to an acquaintance of his that were hobbling and jerky, who were obviously drunk. Even though he was not sober, he offered his faithfulness and his kindness to him. I took my steps gracefully and waved at him. He seemed delighted to see me.…

Duplicity abounds in this tale of an aristocrat obsessed with retribution against his friend. "The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allan Poe enchants the reader to experience the damp catacombs to witness the premeditated act. Through the excitement of the carnival, the two walk together into the caverns to substantiate a bottle of wine. The theme is when someone is unable to overlook minor infractions; it can turn into deep hatred. The irony Poe skillfully added is dominant from the introduction of the characters to the bone chilling end.…
