THE CASK OF AMONTILLADO: FORTUNATO’S POINT OF VIEW
I opened my eyes. They felt heavy and my head throbbed. I was covered with beads of sweat. I stood up and the world seemed to turn. I was dizzy. I looked around and saw the unfamiliar view. Where am I? People with colorful costumes and masks were surrounding me. There were parade floats everywhere. Then, puzzle pieces began to form in my head. I was in the carnival.
I was holding a bottle of Brunello di Montalcino and I drank it all up. The wine seemed to sting my throat. I have been drinking a lot lately. But nevertheless, I loved wine. I love to drink. I wouldn’t care if I die of intoxication. I walked around and the bells of my jester’s motley were clanging.
I looked around and I saw familiar faces. At my near left, I saw a group of women. Three days ago, I caught one of them cheating their husbands. With no delay, I told everyone about her secret. The other woman in the group was a thief. The other was I liar. I realized they were staring at me with a look of anger and disgust in their faces. I just rolled my eyes and walked away. Yes, I have insulted a lot of people already, I wouldn’t care who I offend, as long as but the truth will be revealed. I am powerful, influential, and I have the right to say what I want.
I continued to wander and my legs were moving like jelly. My vision became distorted. I took a bottle of Pimonte and drank like it was water. I abruptly came to a stop when I saw my friend Montresor.
He was delighted when he saw me. He approached me and said: "My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met. How remarkably well you are looking today! But I have received a pipe of what passes for Amontillado, and I have my doubts."
"How?" I said. "Amontillado? A pipe? Impossible! And in the middle of the carnival!"
"I have my doubts," He replied; "and I was silly enough to pay the full Amontillado price without consulting you in the matter. You were not to be found, and I was fearful of

In the short story “The Interlopers” and “The Cask of Amontillado”, the rising action gives you a good mental picture of the mood. When the reader reads the line of text from “The Interlopers” that says, “All around them lay a thick-strewn wreckage of splintered branches and broken twigs.” you can picture in your mind the two men with broken branches and twigs lying around them. Also, in “The Cask of Amontillado”, one line from the rising action is “We passed by walls of piled bones, with casks and puncheons intermingling, into the inmost recess of the catacombs.” In this sentence, you get a good description of what the catacombs looked like.…

Revenge seems to be a haunting thing that eats away at someone’s mind. And that person only gets sweet release when and only when they get that revenge on who is haunting them. Revenge seems to make people go mad if not avenged and this only seems to haunt the weak-willed. And the only people who act upon revenge is those not in their right mind. For example in “The Cask of Amonitillado” the narrator gives no exact reason of why he thinks he deserves revenge on Fortunato. The narrator is also show to have something wrong with his state of mind playing little mind games with Fortunato along the way to the catacombs.…

In the short horror story "The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allen Poe, Poe attempts to convey why both pride and revenge can become dangerous when a person is overwhelmed by either. Poe, through the use of various literary techniques, introduces an horrific drama of two men, one who will stop at nothing to get the revenge that he believes himself and his family worthy of, and another whose pride will ultimately become the instrument of his own death. Fortunato falls prey to Montresor's plans because he is so proud of his expertise in wine, and it is for the sake of his own pride that Montresor takes revenge on the heedless Fortunato. Poe shows how pride and revenge can make a man become obsessive to the point where he justifies murder—something he normally would never do—through exaggerated reasoning, and how pride can make a man so blind that he walks obliviously to his own death.…

In Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” Montressor commits a crime to defend himself from an insult Fortunato made towards him. One could argue that Montressor was simply insane but there is much more to the story when one takes a deeper look at Montressors’ motifs. It is obvious Fortunato insulted Montressor but the question why did Montressor murder Fortunato. In the story Montressor is the narrator but he is not a reliable one and hardly gives much details. What truly drove Montressor to commit this murder was anger that ultimately built up until he could no longer take Fortunato’s insults and led to Montressor confessing or bragging about what he did.…
