Summary Of Jamaica Kincaid's Girl
In the short story, or extremely long sentence, “Girl”, Jamaica Kincaid -the author as well as the speaker- gives a list of ongoing commands that she was receiving. As readers, we assume that these are orders coming from her mother. As we are aware, her family had certain beliefs and also did not approve of her writing later on in life. The italicized words in the text such as “…but I don’t sing benna on Sundays at all and never in Sunday school…” and “…but what if the baker won’t let me feel the bread…” give the reader a sense that Jamaica is interjecting with her mother’s instructions. There is a constant reminder to complete schoolwork or study for a test, because if those tasks are not fulfilled, my mother believes I will become a layabout. Although I do enjoy learning to the fullest extent, it does get very tiresome when there my mother is making sure I finalize my assignments. In my senior year of high school, I would have been eligible for a scholarship called NJ Stars, which allowed me to go to Hudson County Community College and transfer to any four year institution in New Jersey free of cost. However, I needed to rank up three more positions in my entire graduating class to reach the top 15%. It was incredibly stressful and I became extremely drained, which lead me to I give up on my ultimate goal. I realized what an astounding offer the scholarship would be, but I could no longer handle the compulsion or disputes that were caused by this situation. My mother and Jamaica’s mother were very similar when it comes to preventing a failing daughter, while my state of giving up correlates to Jamaica’s
