It was December 2, 2005 when I heard screaming come from my bathroom in Newark, New Jersey. The scream kept getting louder and louder followed by sobbing. As I got closer to the bathroom, all I see is my sister Sammerah holding my mother Patricia in her arms begging her to wake up. I did not think anything of it because I was too young to understand what was going on. All I remember is sleeping with my mother everyday because she seem sick but I did not know what was really wrong with her. I was only 8 years old with no father and now I lost my mother as well.

Regularly, Shareeah would go to a hotel to meet with her companion and Shawn started becoming suspicious. One day, she told her husband I had a doctor's appointment and took me along with her. I stayed at the hotel almost all night until I got the courage to leave and walk home alone. After that night, it did not take my family long to find out what happen. Immediately following this, my grandmother fought for custody and took me in as her own.
Living with my grandmother was everything I could have asked for. Even though we fought almost everyday, she always pushed me through middle and high school years to be better than my other siblings . Raising me was not easy because she had to jungle her health problems and financial problems at the same time. She worked so hard to provide for me even when she not have anything to give. Throughout my journey I've learned that you have to make your own path and not follow the same path my family had for themselves.
I want to attend Virginia State University to advance my career as an Early childhood teacher and become successful in the future. By doing so, I will be the first in my family to attend and graduate from college. I want to end my family's cycle and start a new one. With the help of my friends and family, I will make a difference and strive at Virginia State
