Chapter 4- Is It Cereal or Candy? John Harvey Kellogg and his brother Will Kellogg came up with a cereal operation that they called the Sanitas Food Company in the early 1890s. While experimenting around, Will made an unsweetened taste of cereal that sold 113,400 pounds in1896. In doing that, he kept the experimenting ongoing with flakes of corn which later would be called the Sanitas Toasted Corn Flakes. Then the sugar was added secretly in. John was furious so Will set out on his own creating what we know today at Kellogg’s Toasted Corn Flakes. Churning out 2,900 cases a day; the brothers became rivals and enemies, taking on another to court twice. After it all, Will came on top and on December 11, 1922, he named his company as just “Kellogg’s”. Other companies joined the experimental movement and thus the Big Three were born. These included Kellogg’s, Post, and General Mills. By 1970, the Big Three controlled 85 percent of the cereal market. In doing so, this made the world’s appetite change. Everything seemed great until the Big Three faced trade watchdogs in Washington. Due to the Big Three cramming the shelves with all their products, there was no room for any other friendly competition. Because of this, the Federal Trade Commission brought a complaint against them in1976. The Big Three got off the hook a little when replied “We never said they were nutritious, we just said they tasted good.” The schemes still continued and the Federal Trade Commission still worked harder and harder for healthy justice. The Big Three came back on top until the 1990s when retailers like Safeway and Kroger began selling their own generic knockoffs of the name brands making it cheaper for consumers. In 1994, General Mills Broke from the group to gain instead of keep losing by dropping their prices. Kellogg’s began to think of the loss and came out with the Mini- Wheat’s cereal among others for a healthier look on their

Childhood obesity has swept America up from under its feet. However, the fall of the blame of this epidemic still remains unclear. The role of parents in children’s healthy eating habits comes down to what food they are buying to put on the table, how much time they are willing to put into preparing healthy meals, and how well they educate their children on nutritious value. Alongside the parents, the role of the government in children’s healthy eating habits is in marketing, advertisement, federal policies in pricing, and the regulation of food served in a child’s school cafeteria. I had never really focused on or considered this issue until after reading Salt, Sugar, Fat by Michael Moss. Who is to be held responsible for this obesity epidemic is something that has long since remained controversial, and is a topic I desire to write my final research paper on.…

The Kellogg Company began in 1906 in Battle Creek, Michigan with the founder Will Keith Kellogg, also known as W.K., and his brother Dr. John Harvey Kellogg accidently created a new kind of cereal that was flaked when trying to make shredded wheat cereal. Will Kellogg did not a education past the sixth grade, but still decided to entered the cereal industry with his new style of cereal in 1906. In 1906 the United States was going from eating breakfast that was rich in fat to a breakfast that was rich with grains and easier to consume as well as easier to make. Will Kellogg realized that to produce a good cereal he needed a good flake and he found that using corn grit or what he like to call “sweet heart of the corn” and Corn Flakes were born. At the time Will Kellogg decided to enter the cereal industry there were forty-two other cereal companies that had already resided in Battle Creek, Michigan. So with there being so many companies selling cereal, but his was the first to use corn, Will Kellogg wanted to ensure that his brand of cereal stood out from the rest so he came up with the idea of calling his brand of cereal, known as Toasted Corn Flakes, as “The Original” and Will Kellogg also placed his signature on each cereal box. Because of the unique sweet taste of Corn Flakes, Will Kellogg succeeded, with his Toasted Corn Flake Company, competing against the abundant of other wheat flakes companies. The Corn Flakes brand cereal succeeded because Will Kellogg was catering to the breakfast needs of the greater population, not only those concerned with their health, but to those looking for a quick and tasty breakfast.…

There were a number of individuals who made various forms of cereal as a diet for its patients of the Sanitarium in Battle Creek, Michigan. The cereals that were made however were not for mass market. Not until 1906 was there a patent for cereal, and Corn Flakes were mass marketed by The Kellogg Company. The Kellogg Company, however, was not the first company to mass market cereal. The first was The Shredded Wheat Company, which sold shredded wheat. The Shredded Wheat Company was sold later to what is now known as Nabisco. Although there were a few companies producing breakfast cereal for consumers, The Kellogg Company was the largest and most productive.…

The Kellogg Company is the world's leading producer of cereals. Its products are manufactured in 18 countries and sold in more than 180 countries. For more than 100 years, Kellogg's has been a leader in health and nutrition through providing consumers with a wide variety of food products. These are designed to be part of a balanced diet and meet the different tastes of consumers. Kellogg's focuses on sustainable growth. This involves constantly looking for ways to meet consumer needs by growing the cereal business and expanding its product portfolio. Market research is a specific area of marketing that informs businesses like Kellogg's about the things consumers need, how best to design products to answer those needs and how to advertise those products to consumers. Market research goes beyond finding out what consumers are thinking today. It can identify what consumers might want in the future. In this way market research helps a business to make more informed choices. This reduces the risks for any new product development (NPD). It also increases the likelihood that products will be well received by consumers when they are launched. Kellogg's launched Crunchy Nut Cornflakes in the UK in 1980. Since then, it has become one of the most important brands for Kellogg's with a sales value of £68 million (according to IRI sales data). In 2003 the Crunchy Nut brand created a brand extension. This involved using the Crunchy Nut name to launch a new product called Crunchy Nut Clusters. This variant has two varieties, Milk Chocolate Curls and Honey and Nut. Both of them have enabled the brand to reach a wider group of consumers. This brand extension is now worth £21 million in annual value sales (according to IRI sales data). This case study focuses on the importance of market research during the development and launch of Crunchy Nut Bites, a more recent extension to the Crunchy Nut brand. The objective of this innovation was to provide a new flavour and texture for…
