Recent years have witnessed an increasing number of people going abroad for study. There are many positive and negative effects of studying abroad on young people.
On the one hand, studying abroad has lots of positive aspects. In the first place, they would be more independent due to they must do everything by themselves, such as, registration, cooking and washing. Additionally, they can broaden their horizons. And they go to a completely new place also everything is different. They will get more knowledge, for example, cultures and customs when communicating with different foreign students. Finally, they can best see the strengths and weaknesses of their motherland. That is they have lived in two countries, having a better understanding of their motherland.
However, studying abroad also has several disadvantages. First and foremost, they will get some psychological problems. For example, homesickness and loneliness, they are far away from family and friends, and they have fewer chances to communicate with parents. What’s more, they are lacking of understanding of other people’s cultural background. They are unfamiliar with the new country, and don not know how to behave in an unfamiliar culture. Furthermore, there is a great financial burden to the family because of the higher tuition fee and the higher cost. Lastly, this may result in severe brain-drain. This is owing to that an increasing number of excellent students will choose to work and study in foreign countries. Thus, studying abroad has some drawbacks.
To put all into one nutshell, from my own perspective, studying abroad brings much more benefits than drawbacks.

However, this is an assumption. According to Cleary’s article, there are indeed glaring disadvantages to studying abroad. Firstly, the cost of pursuing higher education overseas is very high. In Australia, the cost alone for an undergraduate degree for international students range from $15k-$30k annually as compared to its fees for local students at $7k-$10k. This is not even including the cost of living the student would incur overseas. The significantly higher fees for international students is definitely a huge factor of how studying abroad may not be the ideal choice for everyone. Furthermore, governments and institutions are starting to implement policies to ensure that local universities still appeal to their locals. This can be seen by student exchange programmes set up where students get to experience education in a different country for one or two semesters while still paying local university fees. Also, most governments subsidise their local students, like in Australia, where the government has schemes called “Higher Education Loan Programme” and “Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support”, which gives out loans to local students and offer subsidies from the government…

There are both positive and negative effects to studying abroad. A study conducted on student sojourners found fitting in socially, academic success, and language skills are the top three primary concerns (Ryan and Twibell, 2000). Otherwise they are known as stressors. Stress is the body’s normal response to events that appear threatening or overwhelming to your senses. It can manifest itself through various symptoms, which can affect a person’s health negatively. Considering the theory of acculturation, stress that students experience can turn into eustress (i.e. “good” stress). Though the students have found themselves in an unfamiliar environment, the first reaction would be intimidation but the second reaction is the one that counts. Student…

Does studying abroad always give more opportunities for international students? I strongly think studying abroad presents more disadvantages to international students than advantages. Even though some people believe that studying in another country gives international students unique experiences and opportunities that they may not find in their own country, I do not support this opinion. While I was in Australia for two years, I experienced culture shock and suffered from homesickness. In addition, I had to go through various hardships and cope with many difficult situations for myself. An Australian study reports that language, tuition cost, and feelings of isolation ranked the highest among problems faced by international students (qtd. in Lee and Rice 387). It is not a surprise to say that most international students suffer from all sorts of hardships in other countries. As I am an international student in the U.S., I think there are many problems faced by those who choose to study abroad, including the language difficulties, a strain on personal relationship, and adjusting to local culture and traditions.…

Studying abroad has great pros. To begin with, students have an amazing opportunity to have better education. When we compare our education system with that of highly developed countries, there will be a vast amount of difference in the way students are educated. Studying abroad helps us learn the newest technologies and more advanced knowledge which is a far cry from the academic knowledge that Vietnamese students are taught. Moreover, we’re given a wonderful chance to improve our language. Nothing is better than learning language with the native speakers and using what we’ve learned to talk to them. Secondly, as we’ve been equipped with valuable knowledge, we’ll have a better degree and enlarge on our job opportunities. When we apply for a job, our degree will gain us greater advantages than the others. The third pro is that students can develop social skills. We can be independent because our family won’t be around to tell us what to do and eventually, we’ll learn to take care of ourselves. In addition, we are more confident and we can make friends easily. Last but not least, studying abroad opens to us an abundant world of cultures and languages. This might be the best experience one can have in his life time and studying abroad paves way for it.…

On the other hand studying abroad has many demerits. First, adapting to a new environment is a real challenge for every foreign student. While changing the weather can affect our health, different cultures and customs may influence our mind and make us become less confident or even a victim of discrimination. Every day may turn into a struggle for survival in a strange country. If he doesn't have enough physical and mental strength, he will fail to adjust himself in the new environment. As a result, he could neither study nor gain beautiful experiences as he has expected. Also, when he gets sick in other country, he will find some trouble. There’s no one take care of you.
