The information applies to persons whose primary intention in coming to Australia is to study, and they will generally be studying for more than 12 weeks. Students who wish to study a short course may be able to do so on other visa classes such as the tourist visa, which allows study for up to three months.
A student needs to meet certain requirements to obtain a student visa. Each visa that DIAC issues has a particular subclass, which relates to the student’s study intentions.

1. This visa is for the parents or guardians of overseas students (under 18 years of age) who are studying in Australia whilst holding a Student Visa.
2. For students intending to udertake studies that are sponsored by AusAID or the Australian Department of Defence. Students are able to undertake full-time courses of any type
3. For students intending to undertake non-Australian Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Award Foundation Studies, or other full-time courses or components of courses not leading to an AQF Award / qualification.These courses can be undertaken at any educational institution in Australia though generally not at a university.
4. This visa is for students intending to undertake a Masters by Research or a Doctoral (PhD) Degree.These courses are usually undertaken at a university.
5. This visa is for students intending to undertake a Bachelor Degree, Associate Degree, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Post-Graduate Diploma or Masters by Coursework.

6. These courses are usually undertaken at a university, those some non-university educational institutions may also conduct these courses.

7. This visa is for students intending to undertake a Certificate I, II, III or IV (except ELICOS), VET Diploma, VET Advanced Diploma, Vocational Graduate Certificate or Vocational Graduate Diploma Courses.
