Student Dress Code Essay
When observing a student’s physical appearance, one may say their attire and style defines their individuality. A special shirt, a comfortable pair of shoes, or affordable slacks are some examples of dress choice for students today. Sometimes students dress to remain unique to popular trends, and others may not have the resources to pick and choose their attire. Although some believe a dress code would influence a more effective educational environment, it would not produce better results, given a student’s prohibition of self expression, required resources for enforcement of such a code, and possible incurred costs on students and parents. Students would miss class time or accumulate violation points, possibly restricting them from important extra-curriculars. Sports, Clubs, and Fine Arts programs would suffer as a result, simply for trying to discipline students who did not follow the rules. Sometimes, there are students who unfortunately do not have the means to afford proper attire enforced by dress codes, and this often presents a problem for the students and families legally. For example, some students live in homeless shelters, and often do not have income of any sort to afford new attire. If a student wears jeans with holes or a dirty shirt, the student should not receive penalization, because their personal situation is not considered, and it violates their free rights. Although a dress code could help prevent some ongoing issues, such as indecency and time consumption picking outfits every morning, it would go against each individual’s right to self-expression. If a dress code were in place, students would less likely wear inappropriately reveling attire and help assist the school in adopting a more professional image. But what if students plan to follow a career path in which dress codes are not required? Trying to enforce a code would only make students inhibit their
