INTRODUCTION
Eli Lilly and Company has been in business for more than 135 years. The global, research-based company was founded in May 1876 by Colonel Eli Lilly in Indianapolis, Ind., in the Midwestern section of the United States. He was a 38-year-old pharmaceutical chemist and a veteran of the U.S. Civil War and was frustrated by the poorly prepared, often ineffective medicines in those days. Consequently, the company was formed concentrating on the following commitments:
A company that manufactured pharmaceutical products of the highest possible quality.
The company would develop only medicines that would be dispensed at the suggestion of physicians rather than by eloquent sideshow hucksters.
Lilly pharmaceuticals would be based on the best science of the day.

MILESTONES IN MEDICAL RESEARCH:
1. 1880’s- Lilly was one of the first companies to initiate a bonafide pharmaceutical research program, hiring a pharmaceutical chemist as its first scientist.
2. 1920’s- Our researchers collaborated with Frederick Banting and Charles Best of the University of Toronto to isolate and purify insulin for the treatment of diabetes, then a fatal disease with no effective treatment options. The work resulted in Lilly's introduction of Iletin, the world's first commercially available insulin product, in 1923.
Lilly initiated a research program to find a treatment for pernicious anemia, a life-threatening blood disorder, and introduced a liver-extract product that served as a standard of therapy for decades. The company's collaborators on the project, two researchers at Harvard University, later shared a Nobel Prize for the discovery of liver therapy against anemias.
3. 1940’s- Lilly was among the first companies to develop a method to mass-produce

The chemical structure of penicillin was determined by Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin in the early 1940s. Penicillin has since become the most widely used antibiotic to date, and is still used for many Gram-positive bacterial infections. A team of Oxford research scientists led by Australian Howard Florey and including Ernst Boris Chain and Norman Heatley devised a method of mass-producing the drug. Florey and Chain shared the 1945 Nobel prize in medicine with Fleming for their work. After World War II, Australia was the first country to make the drug available for civilian use. Chemist John C. Sheehan at MIT completed the first total synthesis of penicillin and some of its analogs in the early 1950s, but his methods were not efficient for mass production.…

Before Elion and the groups she worked with the world did not know much about medicines and treatments for diseases. A chemist named Gerhard Domagk discovered Prontosil, which is a dye that killed streptococcus bacteria, or strep throat (Encyclopedia.com). Also at this time “sulfa” drugs were created. They help fight a wide variety of disease yet they had some side affects like kidney failure, skin lesions, and high fever. Eventually the use of these drugs was stopped because it was found to be dangerous (Encyclopedia.com).…

In January of 1922, Dr. John Macleod walked into a small high-ceilinged room surrounded by crisp white walls and a small blue cot. On that cot lay a gaunt-faced young boy named Leonard Thompson. He was barely 14 years old , in a coma, and slowly dying from a previously incurable disease. Macleod had been testing a hormone that could cure this boy and people just like him from their life threatening illness, but had been unsuccessful in finding something that would help. However, today was a very big day. Macleod had finally gotten a pure enough sample of dog insulin that he could give it to this boy.…

The 1920’s was a very important time in the history of Diabetes and insulin discovery and synthesis. In 1920, Frederick Banting returned from war. He was a struggling physician with a big dream = to solve the mystery that is Diabetes Mellitus. He had this idea: ‘’Ligate pancreatic ducts of dogs. Wait 6-8 weeks for degeneration. Remove the residue and extract.’’ However, he did not have the physical or financial resources to further explore the idea. (Harrison) He then returned to his alma mater, the University of Toronto, and requested the assistance of J.J.R. Macleod who was a world renowned physiologist. J.J.R Macleod…

First of all, great inventions and discoveries were made during 1920s. These fascinating discoveries and inventions had made significant impacts and brought changes in people’s everyday lives. Some of the essential items that we use every day were inventions made in the 1920s, such as vacuums and dishwashers. The three major discoveries and inventions that I believe were the greatest out of all which still are being used today are insulin, private automobiles, and radio. Insulin was the first effective medical treatment towards diabetes. Diabetes was one of the major diseases that had killed many people around the world during 1920s. Proper and effective treatments towards diabetes were needed as soon as possible. In 1921 at University of Toronto’s labratory, Dr. Fredrick Banting with help of his co-leagues and students succeeded isolating insulin which is a hormone from the dog. Banting’s idea was to inject the isolated insulin to the patient’s body since the reason diabetes is being caused is because of the scarcity of the insulin in one’s body. The results of insulin were astonishing! Banting and his colleagues had successfully…

Also during the Roaring Twenties Two major medical breakthroughs were made, those are the discoveries of both insulin and penicillin (the roaring twenties). In 1920 Dr. Frederick Banting of the University of Toronto and his colleague Charles Best were able to make a pancreatic extract which had anti-diabetic qualities which they successfully tested on diabetic dogs (1920s medicine).Soon an entire research team was working on the production and purification of insulin. Other researchers assisted them to purify insulin for use on diabetic patients (1920s medicine). Penicillin was discovered in 1928 by Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming, who noticed bacterial growth around a blue-green mould on a surface (history of penicillin). Fleming concluded that the mould was releasing a substance that was slowing down…

One of the major breakthroughs of the 1920s was the discovery of insulin. The vaccine was discovered by an experiment done on a diabetic dog. “It’s blood sugar rose. It became thirsty, drank lots of water, and urinated more often. It became weaker and weaker. The dog had developed diabetes” (Nobel Prize: The Discovery of Insulin). The experiment on the dog was done because Banting and Best wanted to remove the pancreas from the dog. As a result of this, Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas, which was an important treatment for diabetic patients. The medical treatment of insulin was important because diabetes was one of the feared diseases which caused death. Additionally, vaccinations for pertussis, diphtheria, tuberculosis, and tetanus were all discovered in the 19th century. The vaccine for tuberculosis was major because tuberculosis is the spreading of an infectious disease, which affected the lungs and other parts of the body. Patients were able to be treated by the medical vaccinations, so they could produce immunity against the disease. Medicinal discoveries were major in the 19th century because there were more vaccinations and treatments for patients to be treated with against deadly diseases, which were easily spreading throughout America’s population. History of Penicillin

    • 1004 Words
    • 5 Pages

Penicillin first came to the stage in 1896 when discovered by a French student named Ernest Duchesne; however, Sir Alexander Fleming gets the true credit for its discovery. Initially, the finding of Penicillin was an accident. Fleming was a bacteriologist working at Saint Mary’s hospital, who noticed one day in 1928 that a plate culture of Staphylococcus had been contaminated by a blue-green mold. So, during his observation he noted that colonies of bacteria near the mold were being dissolved. Then, out of curiosity, Fleming grew the mold in a pure culture and found that it produced a substance that killed a number of disease-causing bacteria. So, after further research, he named the substance Penicillin, and then published his findings in 1929, stating that his mold could potentially have more value if it could be produced in larger quantities. Sir Alexander Fleming made great strides in learning about Penicillin; however, it was not until 1939, when other scientists started research on it,…
