Story Of An Hour Dramatic Irony Analysis
Dramatic irony is when the reader knows something that the characters are not aware of. In The Story of an Hour, the dramatic irony was that Louise Mallard was happy about her husband's death, while her family thought she was actually upset. One example in the story is when it says "She did not stop to ask if it were or were not a monstrous joy that held her (2)." She was not ashamed that she was happy that her husband died. Another quote that shows how Louise is feeling is, "There would be no one to live for her during those coming years; she would live for herself (2)." Louise felt powerless when she was with her husband. He was so powerful that he bent her will to his (2). She now has the freedom to do what she wants without her husband.
