Storm Descriptive Writing
My family's bright, white van, that is covered in stickers of various colors and shapes, rumbles down the rough road. I look out the window to see the vibrant green trees, the grass that is a light shade of brown, and the occasional red and brown dead possum lying down in the middle of the road. Then I look out the windshield and see the cloud covered, dark sky that warns us of an upcoming storm. As we approach our white house with paint peeling off, I look out upon our yard that is filled with various play sets from my childhood, and multiple fruit trees that no one ever picks. I look across the desolate cotton field owned by our neighbors who I barely know. I see my Alaskan Husky, Maple, running around the yard with four small puppies.
Next I see the large brown deck that leads to our swimming pool filled with greenish tinted water because no one cares to clean it since it is never used. I open the van door and hop out to the smell of fresh manure that has been added over the cotton fields. I grab the doorknob and turn it so that I can finally make my way inside. As I walk in I smell barbecue chicken being cooked in the crockpot. I set my books down on the

for a few hours I go back into our petite kitchen. I grab my school books off the counter and make my way to my desk. I sit down in my comfortable gaming chair and look through my books thoroughly for my homework. I find my assignment and go to work. When I finish my large amount of homework, I put it into the correct binder and return to the kitchen. In the kitchen, I return my books. I walk back into the living room and sit back down at my computer. I open my small black laptop and type in my password. After I am done on my laptop, I go into our small green bathroom and take a shower. When I am done, I walk into my bedroom that is filled with random things. I see stuffed animals, books I never read, my soft blue bed, and miscellaneous items. I lie down in my soft bed and go to

Here in this small community, seemingly blocked off from the rest of the world, lies a small slate colored house with a large white tarp sheltering the driveway. Adjacent to it, is a fairly large camping trailer that, if it's lucky, gets used for its intended purpose. The maroon deck in the foreground brings life and color to the dull, 1- story house. The front yard, in which I spent my childhood, seems everlastingly covered with the blades of the towering trees that I have grown so accustomed to. The aroma of the rainfall the night prior still lingers in the air, even as the sun begins to rise over the dewy, frost ridden lawn. Here, in the confines of my own habitat, listening to the songs of the morning birds and the blue jays, is where I connected with my surroundings. Here, is where I call home..…

I am upstairs and ready to begin. I start by dusting a little, moving some boxes to the side, when I am suddenly distracted by a particular box. The box had my name written on it, and as I put the duster aside, I walk towards the box. On top of the box it had some old photo albums, and I open the first photo album. I start looking through the photo album and all I see is some old family photos, birthday parties, special events and holiday pictures. Putting that album aside, I open the next photo album. It was pictures of me growing up with close friends and family. It was like for a second, I was going back in time. I almost immediately, forget about the cleaning and pull up a small plastic pinkish stool and sat down.…

We drove in a bright emerald minivan who was older than America. The seats were a gray-blue color, the color of a stormy sea. The cup holders were half broken and the windows were covered in tiny sticky fingerprints. The sun beat down in hot and stifling waves. All the liquid in the car was near boiling and crayons were melting into the seats. The air conditioning was a blessing on my skin. When we first arrived, we stayed in a Best Western hotel by the river that made really good cheesy omelets. After two weeks, we rented a dull, brown house in a neighborhood near where I live now. It had thick fluffy jade colored carpet in the basement, petite bedrooms, an overrun backyard, and a painfully small…

When I open the door it was like a home filled with love and purity my ideal home it was just perfect. As soon as u walk in you see an average size kitchen on the right and a big bathroom with a bedroom on the left and when you keep walking straight there is a living room and a balcony with the most spectacular view of the pier and upstairs there is a bathroom and two rooms. For the first week or so it felt like I was in heaven waking up in the morning and looking upon the whole town covered in fog going to the rocks and looking for crabs, snails, and shells. One day we decide to go to the ocean and although it was cold we went and started searching for shells and then we found something that I happen to know what it was but never actually felt it alive and fresh out the water. I picked it up and showed it to my friend and we started running to the apartments and showed everyone what we found, everyone had their mouths open and started to touch it. There was a tiny voice that started to say to put the purple starfish back because it deserves to live and so i went back and tried to go as deep as I can to lay it down so no one will harm it. For many days we went to the beach till sunrise to sunset watching the tides rise and decrease and seeing the…

You feel the cool air warm up around yourself. There is a pleasantness that can only be found in these warm winter days. Birds squawk overhead. In a pack they fly in v’s. You wanted to fly, but the dream fled after you jumped off the deck. Birds gain height, you gained a broken arm. The birds slow and descend onto the small patch of grass to your left. Wildlife is all around you, but the adults don’t seem to notice. Not far ahead, a squirrel shoves acorns into his mouth, climbing up a tree he deposits his cache into a hole. He runs down the tree to start the process again. Nature is a cycle, a loop that won’t…

    The Poem Storm Warnings

    • 475 Words

In the poem, "Storm Warnings" the organization is very important to the fluency of the poem. In the very first line the reader starts to get a feeling of the literal meaning of the work. In saying, "The glass has been falling all the afternoon" one learns that a barometer is falling, hence bad weather is on its way. The allegory, symbolic representation, that "glass" is a barometer is because later in the poem, the words "instruments and weatherglasses" are used. The poets tone, the general atmosphere is dim and gloomy but one gets the feeling that the poem isn't about the storm but living through it. In the first stanza the reader understands that a storm is approaching, "gray unrest is moving across the land" and windows are boarded up to protect them from the forthcoming conditions. As the reader moves toward the second stanza, they understand that the storm is going to come as it has in the past, regardless of its prediction, but the metaphorical meaning starts to emerge. Time is cyclical as is the weather. In the third stanza the reader gets the impression that even if a storm or foul weather is predicted, one can only prepare for it, they can't change it. "The wind will rise, We can only close the shutters." Basically the storm will come and there is nothing anyone can do except plan for it. In the final stanza it appears that they have prepared for the storm; the windows have been shut, the curtains drawn, and the candles lit. "These are the things that we have learned to do Who live in troubled regions." In the last two lines of the poem, one understands that people have to adjust the way they live, especially in times of trouble.…

With my family in front, I stepped onto the tile entryway without taking off my shoes. My soles echoed subtly and strangely in the cavernous, open concept and my soul slowly deflated into the empty space. Sundry clutter was pushed into a corner, backed by boxes holding household items that I wouldn’t miss until they are at the back of the one-car garage and crying to be of assistance. Cautiously, I gave myself a brief tour of the place that I once was able to walk through with my eyes closed, albeit with a couple trips here and there. Though there wasn’t much to trip over there’s still a good deal to cleaned before we could officially call this our old place. I slide open my closet door to find not clothes, but bags and crates and more boxes. Defeated at the sight of so much to still pack, as well as tired, I retreated to where my bed once stood. I began to rebuild my personal space again, and soon I was leaning on my headboard with a warm comforter as a cushion, taking a glance out my window instead of taking a catnap on the cold hardwood floor. The sheer curtains rippled in the cool summer evening breeze, brushing against my skin like a kind ghost and I realized that the real ghost was me. The curtains still hung in the room as the last trace of my presence, but they did not move as I hoped. I had no time to spend in the past, and so I dolefully pull myself out from the spiritual afterlife. I begin to do my duties as to not drag out the…

I was so tired, even attempting to keep my eyes open was a struggle. My whole body was achy after a hard day’s of school work, constantly staring at a computer screen and typing away, just to finish an essay. My pale white hands, frozen by the air conditioning blasting on high, were holding on to the steering wheel like a person gripping the edge of a cliff, hoping not to fall into a dark abyss. My brain wanted to give in, to remain in the sleep that I kept dangerously drifting in and out of. I took a look outside, the road looking meek. The rows if brush hoars any objects spattered off the road by vehicles in the August sun. It felt like I was going around in a circle, my tires skating around the bends and turns of the road. I felt maybe I should slow down so I do not lose…

I crouch down and pick up my large oversized black and white bag and head for the door. I look down at my dogs and their black twinkling eyes not knowing what’s to come. I fall down on to the cold white tiles of the kitchen floor and give them one last final tight hug goodbye with tears streaming down my face not wanting to let go knowing that I will never see them again. I finally release them, stand up and walk out of the house not wanting to look back. The hot muggy air hits me as I walk to the car. I get in and tears are running unchecked down my face onto my lips, being able to taste the warm…

    Whose Reality

    • 1383 Words

Its 9pm on a Sunday and I can feel the first of the rain as its droplets catch on my outstretched palms. There’s something very humbling about the rain. It’s one of nature’s great forces, and completely escapes our control. When the rain comes, it doesn’t account for petty human drama, politics and cultural divisions. I ponder this thought as I round the bend and turn down the next street. The rain is a reminder that above all else, we are at the whim of mother nature. Beyond our constructed realities and perception of modern society lies a force mar more powerful than humanity. This is a somewhat overwhelming thought, and instantly I long for togetherness and company, but I must remind myself that I am a stranger here. Through the windows of the houses lining this street, people go about their lives to the sound of the rain on their rooftops. Perhaps some of them are experiencing similar thoughts to my own? Raindrops slide down my forehead and drip from my brow onto my eyelids- the water blurs my vision. In this dreamlike state, I wander forwards, the lights around me shifting, darting and sliding in the darkness. At this bizarre moment in time I feel a sudden and uncontainable urge to peer through the windows of the houses that surround me, to catch an insight into the lives of these strangers. Through each window lies a different truth, and I am suddenly all too eager to explore these realities- lives that occur in spite of the rain.…

Further in the woods I come across the cabin we used to stay in when I was a child. Now it looks like something you would see in a scary movie. Since the death of my grandfather no one comes here anymore and the cabin has given way to the force of nature. One time this was such a beautiful place. As I head back down the dirt trail it begins to sprinkle rain. The rain smells like fresh laundry that was put on a line to dry.…

    An Abandoned House

    • 340 Words
    • 2 Pages

It was a hot, summer's day as I walked on the dirt road with only silence along my side. As I continued on the road I discovered it led to an old abandoned house. I couldn't help but stop for a few minutes and look at the details of the huge, strange shaped house. I noticed that it had been a long time since anybody even took a look at the house. The old house was left to die, alone, with no one to care. The paint was peeling, the windows were broken and the shingles had been torn from the roof, probably by past storms. What caught my eye was that the unkempt yard, it looked like it hadn’t been cut since the house was abandoned, the grass was almost my height and there was nothing but weeds everywhere. I imagined this house would’ve probably been huge and gorgeous in its days. It had three full stories. The fourth floor had an attic where you could sit and see the sunset on the horizon. The house also had a huge porch with large white columns making a fence to support the balcony. The columns were full of dirt; they looked less white and more brownish-black. As I slowly continued to walk past the house, I could hear the wind whistling through the broken windows. I could see the leftovers of the curtains moving gently in the breeze and the grass swishing left and right in the wind. As I was giving the house a final look I thought I saw a silhouette of somebody beside the window gazing upon me so I started to walk a little bit faster. As I walked I wondered how much longer this house could stand up to the rain and wind before it surrendered itself to nature or would people destroy it and replace it. Maybe it would just be left alone there and would continue standing quietly with its dark, window eyes begging for mercy.…
