Whose Reality
We grow through exploring multiple realities
Its 9pm on a Sunday and I can feel the first of the rain as its droplets catch on my outstretched palms. There’s something very humbling about the rain. It’s one of nature’s great forces, and completely escapes our control. When the rain comes, it doesn’t account for petty human drama, politics and cultural divisions. I ponder this thought as I round the bend and turn down the next street. The rain is a reminder that above all else, we are at the whim of mother nature. Beyond our constructed realities and perception of modern society lies a force mar more powerful than humanity. This is a somewhat overwhelming thought, and instantly I long for togetherness and company, but I must remind myself that I am a stranger here. Through the windows of the houses lining this street, people go about their lives to the sound of the rain on their rooftops. Perhaps some of them are experiencing similar thoughts to my own? Raindrops slide down my forehead and drip from my brow onto my eyelids- the water blurs my vision. In this dreamlike state, I wander forwards, the lights around me shifting, darting and sliding in the darkness. At this bizarre moment in time I feel a sudden and uncontainable urge to peer through the windows of the houses that surround me, to catch an insight into the lives of these strangers. Through each window lies a different truth, and I am suddenly all too eager to explore these realities- lives that occur in spite of the rain.

Amidst the lights and darkness a flash of white catches my eye. Peering closer, I inspect the man with striking white hair. He is not the man I though he was- though does bear a startling resemblance to WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange. As the man with the white hair types furiously at his laptop, I imagine he is emailing Braddley Manning, the US intelligence analyst who is responsible for the largest leak of US military secrets in human history. The rain is more persistent now, but

Is it possible that in this literal, close-minded, needy world that a grace of Santa Ana wind can over power our body with distress and depression? Joan Didion’s masterfully composed essay, Los Angeles Notebook, conveys her view on the Santa Ana winds. Didion argues that a gentle touch of the wind will rapidly have one fall into a coma of distress and despair.…

Here in this small community, seemingly blocked off from the rest of the world, lies a small slate colored house with a large white tarp sheltering the driveway. Adjacent to it, is a fairly large camping trailer that, if it's lucky, gets used for its intended purpose. The maroon deck in the foreground brings life and color to the dull, 1- story house. The front yard, in which I spent my childhood, seems everlastingly covered with the blades of the towering trees that I have grown so accustomed to. The aroma of the rainfall the night prior still lingers in the air, even as the sun begins to rise over the dewy, frost ridden lawn. Here, in the confines of my own habitat, listening to the songs of the morning birds and the blue jays, is where I connected with my surroundings. Here, is where I call home..…

A slight breeze blew throughout the dandy forest, swaying the stiff lifeless trees and blowing the black stained leaves across my bare white feet. As I stumbled across the dead landscape, a slight fog swam around blending in with the increasingly falling snow. Hundreds of dark wood surrounding me seemed to slowly cave in, creating a narrow cave-like passage. An eerie feeling swept over me, and I stopped completely, analysing every detail around me. The smog became thicker, blinding the scenery and almost completely covering my vision. I sensed an inhuman presence watching me, and flinched whenever a snapping sound came from a faraway distance. I slowly turned around and began pacing in the direction I came from. The fog smothered me but I kept running,…

I dreamt of the rain. The same rain that filled my entire childhood. The same cold rain that showered down on the alleyways that I hid in, sloughing the grime off the walls and into whatever small crevice I would have been hiding in. I dreamt of the same drops of rain that poured like stones, the same stones that were thrown at the many beggars, like myself, living in the winding narrow streets of Aquillum. I found myself walking down the same paths I used to walk and beg in, the same narrow winding passageways I used to evade any furious shopkeepers who would desperately search for the sewer child who stole their wares.…

Weather can affect people’s behavior, positively and negatively. When the weather is nice and hot, it affects people positively by encouraging them to enjoy the outdoors, however, when the weather is bad, like when a hurricane hits this effects people negatively by worrying. Similarly, in the essay “Santa Ana Winds”, by Joan Dideon, the winds are so abrasive and obstructive that it engenders people to actually commit suicide. This occurs in Los Angeles. Even though Dideon provides a scientific explanation for the soft winds, she characterise hem as evil by showing their effects on people and on the environment.…

    Hange: A Short Story

There’s something so tragically beautiful about the rain, Hange muses to herself as she traces and connects the transparent drops dotting the mullioned window. She can’t deny it: it’s certainly fitting for the given situation. She breathes in and the fiery ache within her lungs doesn’t go away; it only worsens, and she fears, for a fleeting moment, that maybe it’ll burn a cavity through her chest.…

Time waited on her shoulder with the manic sloth it reserves for children, the insane, and wives whose husbands are away improving the world. Almost by reflex, she reached out and changed the wavelength of her windows. The garden faded; in its place, the city center rose by her left hand, full of crowding people, blowboats, and buildings (but she kept the sound down). She remained alone. An over-crowded world is the ideal place in which to be lonely (Aldiss 445).…

Gazing at the stars outside the sun roof of my husband’s silver sports car seemed to be the only way to control the excitement building inside me. My imagination ran wildly thru visions of scenic mountains draped in clouds of fog. The grey rocky cliffs surrounded by colorful spring flowers almost parallel the beauty of the cool crystal water flowing over a fall like the most rapid of rain spraying a chilly mist on all who behold. With my head full of fantasy and soul full of adventure, the possibility of this dream come true becoming a life changing nightmare seemed all but impossible.…

The rain came down in a light pitter patter, as I sat on my porch swing with a steaming cup of tea clutched in my hands. A blanket was tucked around my body, preventing the cool air from giving me a chill. The rain washed the cars and houses as it poured down on everything in its path. The smell of the rain only being able to be described as satisfactory as the smell of clean linen sheets. The usually busy neighborhood, being as quiet as a mouse with the exception of the rumbles of the sky. I sat like this all morning, taking in the beauty before it was time for me to go inside and start my day.…

    Backyard Description

It is truly a mesmerizing sight to behold. Everything is bathed in golden sunlight, except for the long, still shadows cast on the ground. My own shadow stretches out beside me like a taller twin. A short, emerald carpet rolls out before me, the freshly cut blades scattered in every which way. Dozens of mosquitoes dart around, seeking its prey to fill their hunger. A blur of brown fur with a wagging tail is running off in pursuit of them. My dad is straining behind a huge lawnmower that is eating up the yard and spitting out a trail of fresh green cuttings. His sun tanned face lights up when he sees the sparkling glasses of lemonade in my hands. The sun above is an unbearably bright, cartoon shaped clouds, the sky vast as an ocean. Flowers all around the size of dinner plates are opening its petal upwards to absorb the beneficial rays. Some of the smaller flowers have limp petals and wrinkled stems. My mom has picked up the long green hose that slithers across the law in an attempt to revive the withering plants that suffered the harsh seasons. The mouth of the hose spits out water falling like waves in an inconsistent matter. A few brown earthworms are wiggling in the mud, while the neighboring army of ants panics over its disturbed home. My backyard has suddenly become a scene from an outdoor documentary in HD.…

The word WikiLeaks has been added to our everyday vocabulary only a couple of years ago. Yet, it has surged in its usage in perfunctory conversation with astounding pace. The organisation created by Australian hacker Julian Assange and a few of his close associates, the closest being fellow German hacker Daniel Domscheit-Berg, has captured the rapt attention of the world media by its activities. WikiLeaks has been an influential organisation and has created waves, whether beneficial or detrimental, across the international community. The intent of writing this term paper is to explore the origination of the organisation with its set of goals, ideals and methodologies, and assessing the impact that it has had on the contemporary global and domestic scenarios. This assessment is further validated by a detailed case study on the specific impact of WikiLeaks on the diplomatic relations between the United States and Pakistan. The paper tries to establish a link between WikiLeaks and a change in the international structure, as it were. Issues relating to the tyranny of a uni-polar world and future prospects of change (in facilitating which WikiLeaks plays a part) are discussed. WikiLeaks has been at the wrong end of many a pointing finger with regard to the kind of work it does. Towards the end, the paper discusses the ethical questions raised about WikiLeaks and presents arguments both for and against the correctness or wrongness of the objectives of and the means used by WikiLeaks.…

My mind implores me to turn around, but my heart compels me to keep moving. The rain changes from a drizzle to a downpour. A whooshing sound startles me and I look up. WikiLeaks is an international non-profit organisation that publishes submissions of private, secret, and classified media from anonymous news sources, news leaks, and whistleblowers. Its website, launched in 2006 under The Sunshine Press[5] organisation,[6] claimed a database of more than 1.2 million documents within a year of its launch.[7] WikiLeaks describes its founders as a mix of Chinese dissidents, journalists, mathematicians, and start-up company technologists from the United States, Taiwan, Europe, Australia, and South Africa.[8] Julian Assange, an Australian Internet activist, is generally described as its director.[9] The site was originally launched as a user-editable wiki, but has progressively moved towards a more traditional publication model and no longer accepts either user comments or edits. In April 2010, WikiLeaks published gunsight footage from the 12 July 2007 Baghdad airstrike in which Iraqi civilians and journalists were killed by an Apache helicopter, as the Collateral Murder video. In July of the same year, WikiLeaks released Afghan War Diary, a compilation of more than 76,900 documents about the War in Afghanistan not previously available for public review.[10] In October 2010, the group released a package of almost 400,000 documents called the Iraq War Logs in coordination with major commercial media organisations. This allowed every death in Iraq, and across the border in Iran, to be mapped.[11] In November 2010, WikiLeaks began releasing U.S. State department diplomatic cables.…

It all stopped and I was left to take in the exquisiteness of the morning in front of me. Snowflakes fell and landed on my windshield, losing their form and becoming petite droplets of ice-cold water. The sun peaked through the shadowy grey clouds in the sky, hitting the hood of my car and illuminating the road in front of me. Cars were lined up, people were stopped. I knew they were watching me, all while I was taking in the loveliness of this morning.…
