Stereotypes In The Outsiders
In the book, “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton there are two main social groups, the Socs and the greasers. The Socs, and the greasers are enemies in the town of Tulsa and often get into fights just because they are different. Socs and greasers often stereotype each other just based on one experience with one their friends. To start off, there are many instances of greasers stereotyping Socs but here are just a few examples. First, when Ponyboy was looking through Sodapop’s yearbook he stumbled upon a picture of Bob and thought to himself, “What was he like? I knew he liked to pick fights, had the usual Soc belief that living on the West Side made you Mr. Super-Tuff, looked good in dark wine-colored sweaters, and was proud of his rings. But …show more content…
Instead of just seeing them as just a person. Another example is when Ponyboy thinks to himself, “I really couldn’t see what Socs would have to sweat about-good grades, good cars, good girls, madras and Mustangs and Corvairs-Man, I thought, if I had worries like that I’d consider myself lucky”(36). In this example, Ponyboy stereotypes Socs as having no troubles at all, that Socs have got it good in everything even when he only knew what was on the outside of Socs, their fancy clothes and good looks, but never knew any of them on the inside, their personality, worries, and fears. Finally, the last example was when Johnny and Ponyboy were about to get into a fight with some Socs and Ponyboy said, “You know what a Soc is? White …show more content…
First off, when the Socs got into the fight with Johnny and Ponyboy, the Socs said, “You what a greaser is? White trash with long hair” (55). In this instance, the Socs stereotype greasers just as poor losers with long hair without ever talking to them and knowing what they are really like on the inside. Another example was when Randy was talking to Ponyboy about him and Johnny saved those kids in the fire and said, “I don’t know. I don’t know anything anymore. I would never have believed a greaser could pull something like that” (115). In this example, Randy stereotyped all greasers as mean and heartless people just because they were different and poorer than him. He had never talked to a greaser ever on the same level before this instance and just assumed everything about them. Finally, the last example is when Cherry met Ponyboy at the move theater and asked him, “What’s a nice, smart kid like you running around with trash like that for?” (23). Cherry stereotypes all greasers as people that were worth nothing and rude for fun. She only talked Dally in a mean mood and just assumed that all greasers were like that and thought Ponyboy was too nice to fit the picture of what she thought a greaser was. In conclusion, Socs stereotype greasers and nothing kids with long hair and bad manners without ever talking to them just person to person, not Soc to greaser. Socs only looked on the outside

There are many dividing factors in everyday life. From social classes, to political stances. I noticed the difference in their social situations. The greasers feel they have it worse than the socs, coming from broken homes with limited loved ones, aside from each other. The socs, on the other hand, seem to have been born into a silver spoon lifestyls, with luxuries that the greasers never imagined possible for themselves. While the socs may have better living situations, it is apparent to me that everyone gets dealt a bad hand in life at one point or another. The driving force of all conflict between these two parties has always been their differences, when in reality, things are "rough all…

In The Outsiders, every character has been classified as “a greaser”, being stereotyped like that is pretty cruel. When Ponyboy said, “We both need a haircut and some decent clothes. They’ll know we’re hoods the minute they see us!” (Hinton, 64) He admitted to succumbing to his stereotype. Proving to the readers that the Greasers were based on their appearance. When people…

One example is when the book states,” We're poorer than the Socs and the middle class. I reckon we're wilder, too. Not like the Socs, who jump greasers…” This quote shows how the Socs jumped or beat up greasers for nothing. I also learned that the lives of greasers were rough. For example in the book it says,”"Need a haircut, greaser?" The medium-sized blond pulled a knife out of his back pocket and flipped the blade open.” This happened when Ponyboy was peacefully walking down the street. This demonstrates how greasers were always going through bullying for no…

The Socs were more of a disgrace and menace to society than the Greasers because they knew that they were better off than the Greasers and they used that against them. The Socs could easily do something rebellious and blame it on the Greasers because the police saw them as a pest to society. They were seen as the menace of society, but is all that really true? Sure, they don't look like the nicest people in town, but there is more to them than what meets the eye. For example, Ponyboy Curtis tries to act all tough but on the inside, he is a quiet guy who likes poetry and books. On the other hand, Johnny doesn't look like the kind of guy who would kill someone, which he admitted to Ponyboy when he regained consciousness on page 45, but Johnny only did this in defense to save Ponyboy and himself from any more harm.…

If Mustangs symbolizes the Socs in the novel, Greasy hair also symbolizes the Greasers. As you can see, the Greasers probably got their name from their greasy hair. Every members of the Greasers have greasy hair. That is what they’re popular for, having a greasy hair. This also symbolizes them because they can’t afford too much expensive things to symbolize them, unlike the Socs. Also, they think that greasy hair makes them “tuff”, and they recognize themselves in having those kind of hair. But, Johnny and Ponyboy forced to cut their hair in Jay Mountain so that they are not recognized by the cops. Ponyboy cut his hair short and making them blonde while Johnny only cut his hair…

Stereotypes are conventional and oversimplified conceptions and opinion that can create tough misconception of certain people which most of the times turns out harsh and harmful. Brent Staples in “Just Walk On By” and Judith Ortiz Cofer in “THE MYTH OF A LATIN WOMAN. I Just Met A Girl Name Maria “ Both had experiences of being stereotyped even though they had different experiences in different situations and incidents it has the same concept. They were both stereotyped as d someone else. Staples was stereotyped by his African American appearance as a rapist, mugger and a bugler, however he did not fit his stereotype an educated individual with a college degree. Staple dealt with his stereotype in a calm manner by changing his behavior to make people less nervous around him. Similarly cofer was stereotype as housemaid, waitress and a sexual object. Cofer did not fit her stereotype either a colloge educated individual she also handles her stereotype in a calm manner. Her goal however is to replace stereotype with a much more interesting set of realities. Both staples and cofer faced the challenge of dealing with stereotypes in their lives.…
