Stage Manager Research Paper
Stage Manager
One of the many intriguing and challenging jobs in the world of theatre includes stage managing. The stage manager is a key part of any production, making it a very complicated and stressful job. Stage managing is an art within itself, much like any other job. It is an art because of all the complex responsibilities and eventually finished product, the show itself. My chosen career is stage managing. People who chose to work in this career will be expected to “provide practical and organizational support to the director, actors, designers, stage crew and technicians throughout the production process” (The Stage Manager's Job). Stage managers also schedule and run rehearsals, coordinate what the stage crew does, call cues and

A person interested in stage managing should also start as an assistant stage manager to make sure it is something they really want to do. A person also should get lots of experience backstage and “may find it useful to take short courses in technical areas, health and safety and production management” (Stage Manager). A degree in stage management or another closely related field is recommended to get a job, but not always needed. “Alternatively, you may be able to move into stage management after training as an actor or by working your way up through backstage work” (Stage Manager). Usually, a stage manager will have to pay for their own training classes. There is lots of competition in this career field, but there are also many chances to advance. Employees “could also find opportunities in corporate and public events, theme parks, holiday camps and on cruise ships” (Stage Manager). Once someone has more experience and is phenomenal at stage managing, they could have the rare opportunity to manage a professional show, or even manage for Broadway and TV. Most people do not make it to Broadway or TV, but can advance to stage managing for a well known local theatre or a famous …show more content…
If I go into stage managing I could work for a children’s company and get to fulfill my dream everyday. I can see myself being good at this career because I am organized and would like to still be able to see the process of a show, but not having to perform in front of other people. My favorite part about this job is that the stage manager has almost complete control. They can do what task they want that day, and another task the next day. The job would never be dull or boring because you are always doing something new or working on a new project. I would be able to avoid a boring office job by being a stage manager. My least favorite part about the job is that the stage manager is having to be the last one at the theatre everyday and close up the building themselves. I don’t think I’d like this part because it would be creepy to be alone in a building that late. I also don’t like how the stage manager has to worry about props and costuming as well. I can see that getting very stressful and overwhelming after awhile. Even with the few negatives this job has, I think it would be a great career choice for

Working at the Playhouse, or any theatre for that matter, is extremely tiring. Spending all of your summer vacation working there not really having any free time, wearing out my shoes and tearing my pants from running everywhere and climbing on ladders, burning my fingers with the hot glue gun because someone “me” cannot use it, and dropping paint on my favorite shirt. I did not have any time for my friends or family or even myself, this summer vacation was like no other, it might have been tuff but it was all more satisfying. Personally, I am someone who enjoys helping out others and being around so many caring people. I had to learn how to apply actors makeup,…
