The purpose of this assignment is to explore the professional responsibilities of the nurse and their role in safeguarding vulnerable patients, all of which are based around a fictitious scenario. The scenario is centred on a patient named Margaret and is going to be used to identify any vulnerability issues Margaret may have. Margaret could be identified as been vulnerable, as she is an 89 year old lady who is suffering from a heart condition. Margaret is currently living with her daughter and has said that her mother’s health has begun to deteriorate. Margaret is becoming very confused and forgetting to take her medication which has resulted in numerous admissions to hospital. No consent was needed on this occasion as it is a fictitious patient. Based around this fictitious scenario, the aim is to discuss and identify vulnerability and any issues arising from it. Exploring all aspects of vulnerability involving all models and discussing confidentiality, looking at the importance of it and why it should be maintained. This assignment will also look at the mental capacity act and how the nurse and other healthcare professionals assess the patient for capacity and use the models of assessment. All these are in place to protect the patient’s health and well-being and patient rights. Communication is another important skill for any nurse to have. On average, I juggle the workload of a full time student and a certified nurse aid (CNA) position, working approximately 20 hours per week. As a CNA, I am responsible for working with a team of two other CNAs and providing care for 30 elders. My responsibilities are to bathe, dress, and assist elders to dine, serve meals, take vital signs, assist in minor procedures, and assist them with activities of daily living. When working in a long term care facility, it is easy to be negatively affected, because of the customer service nature of the job. The nursing shortage is a growing concern for the nation. The aging population is causing more demand for qualified healthcare professionals. At the same time, healthcare professionals are retiring faster than they can be replaced. This shortage of nursing professionals is causing more overtime work, which creates more nursing errors. As a staff nurse in the emergency room I had to develop leadership skills in order to effectively deliver quality care and maintain safety in a fast paced environment. By identifying safety risks associated with the assignment of inexperienced nurses to triage and discussing the breakdown in communication between physicians and staff, caused by inaccurate triage acuity levels, I effectively facilitated the change in the process of assignments to triage. Once the need of education, mentoring and nursing collaboration to support inexperienced triage nurses in role transition was acknowledged significant positive changes were experienced in staff communication, patient safety, and teamwork which ultimately improved morale.
