Sports Medicine Physician Growing up I always wanted a career in the medical field. Finding the exact career that fits me best is the complicated part. After doing some adequate research, I decided that I would be most successful as a sports medicine physician. First of all, I will explain exactly what a sports medicine physician is. Also, I will go into detail about the education and training requirements and the salary of a sports medicine physician. A sports medicine physician is someone who is trained to promote lifelong fitness and wellness, and encourage prevention of illness and injury. They help patients maximize function and minimize disability and time away from sports, work, or school. They are leaders of the sports medicine teams, which include specialty physicians and surgeons, athletic trainers, physical therapists, coaches, other personnel, and, of course, the athlete (“What is”). Becoming a sports medicine physician requires having a bachelor 's degree and a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree. During undergraduate years, you will need to take pre-med classes in biology, anatomy, and chemistry. The next step is medical school, which is a four year program. The last two years of medical school will include clinical rotations. Usually, sports medicine physicians have primary specialization in either orthopedic surgery or primary care, with subspecialty in sports medicine. During the clinical rotations, you can take electives in either one of these areas. After completing medical school, graduates enter into residency programs. Note that there are no residency programs that allow for specialization in sports medicine, but rotations can include sports medicine procedures (“Sports”).
