PROVISION AND MANAGEMENT OF SPORTS FACILITIES IN NIGERIA UNIVERSITIES IN THE 20TH CENTURIES
ABSTRACT
The most important factors of consideration in planning any sports programme is facility. Despite its importance; enough attention is not accorded to it our universities. The negligence alongside with many other factors has contributed immensely to inadequate or lack of provision and development of sports facilities in the universities. Factors such as economic situation in the country couple with land tenure system, geographical location and the climate with management by owner and not-for-profit operations have contributed to the 20th century universities in Nigeria provision and management of sports facilities in their jurisdiction. Therefore, the development of sports facilities and precaution towards workability should be the watch word of the Nigeria universities management. The paper examined the provision and management of sports facilities in Nigerian universities. The article discussed the concept of facilities, management of facilities and different methods that can be used in the management of Nigeria Universities facilities in the 20th century. Bearing in mind that construction of sports facilities cost a fortune, the paper therefore suggested that Nigeria Universities facilities should be commercialized for proper maintenance. The paper also recommended that new generation universities should be encouraged to host games so that they could be forced to construct sport facilities which could later be used for recreational purposes and future competitions.
