SpongeBob debuted in July of 1999 and it could only be described as the laugh heard ‘round the world, only it didn’t travel that fast at first. No, first things first, that now all too familiar laugh had to survive the inevitable gauntlet of all new shows - the eager audience. I can only imagine what it must have been like for creator Stephen Hillenberg when he pitched this idea. I can just hear him, “Okay, picture it guys, a talking…

Another satirical technique used in Spongebob is the use of parody. Episodes of the show often use parodies of real life situations to make fun of things or people. An example of this comes across in the episode Texas. In this episode, Sandy Cheeks, an underwater squirrel is homesick, missing the open air of Texas. Trying to get Sandy to feel better, Spongebob plans a surprise party for her, using numerous creative ways to try and get her there. One…

“The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist. Piggy, saying nothing, with no time for even a grunt, traveled through the air sideways from the rock, turning over as he went. The rock bounded twice and was lost in the forest. Piggy fell forty feet and landed on his back across the square red rock in the sea. His head opened and stuff came out and turned red. Piggy's arms and legs twitched a bit, like a pig's after it has been killed. Then the sea breathed again in a long, slow sigh, the water boiled white and pink over the rock; and when it went, sucking back again, the body of Piggy was gone” (Chapter 11, Page 387-small book).…

Who does not love to see dolphins and whales flipping and doing tricks? Although the animals look happy and unharmed, there is a dark truth behind the captive marine life in amusement parks and zoos. Yes, attending zoos and marine life amusement parks are a part of childhood; but recently researchers have discovered just how cruel the environment is for the marine life in captivity. After studies of comparing the quality of life of marine animals in the wild and in captivity, there are multiple examples shown in Blackfish, PETA, and the Animal Welfare Institute that show that animals prosper and live longer in their natural habitats. Due to the cruelty endured by the captivated Orcas, all the SeaWorld parks should be shut down and the Orca whales should be set free to prevent further demise to their species.…

In 2009, the cereal giant Kellogg asked stores to stop selling its popular Keebler and Austin brand peanut butter crackers, as health officials reported two more deaths in the nationwide salmonella outbreak that is linked to peanut butter. What is important to note is that Kellogg had discovered no trace of salmonella in its peanut butter crackers but took the action as a "precautionary measure". If Kellogg was looking only at its bottom line, the company could have decided to sit back, say nothing, and continue to collect revenue. Instead, Kellogg willingly put safety first, choosing to withdraw its crackers from the market and forego profits rather than put its customers at risk.…
