Portrayal of soldiers
Betrayal can make us feel like we are being lied to or told a false story about something to make it sound better compared to reality. I have chosen the theme betrayal and disrespect as it is portrays the soldiers in the movies “Hacksaw Ridge” directed by Mel Gibson and “Rambo” directed by Sylvester Stallone. The themes; portrayal and disrespect can also be found in the song “War Pigs” by Black Sabbath and the poem “Dulce Et Decorum Est” written by Wilfred Owens.
The poem Dulce Et Decorum Est is emphasizing that the generals and governments have betrayed their soldiers. The theme is shown by the government and generals selling a fake story about war. “Dulce Et Decorum Est” is a famous quote from the poem which translates …show more content…
The soldiers were betrayed by fighting for the governments, not themselves. This is shown in the song lyrics, “why should they go out to fight they leave that role to the poor”. The politicians were betraying the soldiers by handing down their dirty work without the soldiers knowing. Black Sabbath is helping us understand that the soldiers were betrayed by the politicians not caring about the soldier's lives even though they had sacrificed themselves for the government's war. The song lyrics allowed us to see the political side of war that the soldiers did not. This song gave me a insight of the political side of war and how the politicians betrayed their own soldiers and treated them like they are second class and valueless. Desmond Doss was a soldier who Was disrespected by his own felo soldiers and sergeant because he held certain beliefs. Examples of this disrespect was when Desmond was beaten up by his own soldiers and treated differently by his sergeants because he held a belief to not hold a gun. The soldiers and sergeants thought this was because Desmon thought he was better than the others even though it was really because Desmond had done and seen terrible things when he was young. Mel Gibson allowed us to look into the life of Desmond Doss and and show us how he was disrespected. We can see the disrespected that was acted on Desmon is not right, especially from his own team mates, his own country. This film inspired me because even though Desmond was disrespected he showed a lot of resilience and perseverance. I also now know that people beginning can change their beliefs and values. And we need to respect these
