Speech Language Pathology Personal Statement
Through my involvements as an undergraduate student in the communication sciences and disorders program, I have grown in my passion for the field of Speech-Language Pathology. These experiences have allowed me to develop qualities that make me an excellent candidate to be a high-achieving graduate student at the University of Northern Iowa. I maintain a major GPA of 3.97 while working, and continuing to follow my passions, volunteering for organizations that help those with communication disorders. I have always had a desire for working with children, and I love being able to be a part of their growth; witnessing their achievements and assisting them in their development. This is why much of my volunteer work has been centered on children; working with organizations such as Up with Families, The Spectrum Project, and the Scottish Rite Preschool for children with communicative disorders. In these settings, I was able to be a companion and caretaker for children who had communication needs. I was able to work with individual children very closely during my experiences with the Spectrum Project. My buddy, who had Autism, required extra reassurance and patience. In addition, I

Infants and toddlers with disabilities experience and research experience. I was provided multiple opportunities to get connected and volunteer through the National Student Speech-Language Hearing Association. I also felt the desire to do my part in getting connected with my program, and was the undergraduate co-chair for volunteers for the Iowa Conference on Communicative Disorders. I also attended Advocacy day at the state capitol to speak to representatives about the importance of our field, and why it was of utmost importance that SLP’s keep their licensure to allow clients to receive quality care. The people I worked with and lessons I was able to learn both in and out of school qualify me
