SPEECH LANGUAGE COMMUNICATION
Unit: support children’s speech, language and communication

SPEECH – Speech is vocalizing language, speech happens by muscular movements in the neck, chest, abdomen, head and mouth. Speech is learned by discovering how to coordinate the muscles to produce different sounds that put together form words that people can understand. LAGUAGE – Language is the ability to acquire and use systems of communication; is the cognitive ability to use and learn symbols of communicating that can be spoken, written or signed.

COMMUNICATION – Communications is the action of conveying meaning through signs and language; is to share, send messages or signs to others.

SPEECH LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATIONS NEEDS – Speech, language and communication needs is to have difficulty in communicating with others, in expressing things through speech, language and/or communication, the difficulty may be just in one off these areas or in all; It’s when someone can’t express self or have difficulties in it, have trouble in understanding what others say or the others have difficulty in understanding the way that person communicates.

HOW SPEECH, LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION SUPPORTS:

LEARNING? – Learning happens when children are able to receive, process and use information given, it can be non-verbal (experience) or verbal (what is told/explained/heard) so if the child as difficulty in any of these areas (Speech, language and communication) her learning development will be affected.

EMOCIONAL DEVELPOMENT? – The emotional development depends of the ability to understand, recognize and express own feelings, that’s where it links with the speech and communication skills, the more the child is capable of expressing and recognize her own feelings the more she will be able to control and understand them which help in case of frustration of not being understood by others and self.

BEHAVIOR DEVELOPMENT? – Behavior, language and communication are strongly connected to each other because from early years generally children learn what the words ´´no´´ and ´´yes´´ meaning and this understanding helps to keep them safe and to teach them what is socially acceptable or not (how children will behave). By communicating the child can express her preferences, likes, dislikes, feelings and this knowledge can prevent impulsive behavior.
