The topic of spanking children as punishment has caused serious controversy dating back to as late as the early 1960s. This topic not only brings out the statistical points but the ethical and moral points as well. Spanking kids as physical punishment is wrong for all ages because it can not only have psychological damage but intellectual damage as well.
During my dad’s childhood when he would misbehave he would get a swat on the bottom or sometimes a belt to the bottom if that’s what his dad was feeling that night. When being asked why he didn’t spank my sister or I his answer was, “Because it hurt me immensely and I would never put you or your sister through that pain and if I did I don't think I could ever forgive myself”. Children who get swatted or spanked grow up to be understanding like my dad or more aggressive. Usually the case is that the child becomes a more aggressive adult. Researchers said that children who were spanked at age five had lower vocabulary scores at age 9. The gray matter in the brain is what aids in decision making. When a child is spanked with enough force by either a belt or a book the gray matter in the prefrontal cortex becomes decreased.
Spanking will continue to be an issue now until a law is passed or people stop having morals and values. Spanking should be against the law based on the facts that have been brought to the public's view in the last 10 years. Elizabeth Gershoff, a professor from the University of Texas at Austin, said that she has never found test results that showed a positive consequence of spanking children. Parents hope to raise their children so that they may achieve the greatest potential they can achieve.
