Socialism is a political ideology that falls on the left wing of the political spectrum. Socialism was around for many centuries but was not popular until the nineteenth century (Heywood, 1997). The goal was to eliminate capitalism and replace it with common ownership (Heywood, 1997). Socialism is more of an umbrella ideology, and has many different variations. It is usually based on the family’s income, if the youth is already in child care, and whether or not they are in afterschool programs (“Paying for child care” 2013). Even though this is a beneficial program, it is still flawed. Many families that are eligible for subsidized child care do not receive it due to insufficient amount of funds. One of socialisms main elements is social equality, the community is more important than the individual (Heywood, 1997). Sweden and Denmark are also modern socialist countries that have universal child care available for everyone. From 1970 until 1980 most of Sweden’s income went to building a larger child care system allowing women and working families to leave their children while they worked (Earles, 2008). If Canada increased taxes many families would be able to put their children into child care and would be able to work a proper job.
Another element of socialism is need, which emphasizes that every citizen should be given the basics such as personal security, shelter, food and water (Heywood, 1997). Although child care is not looked at as a need, whether or not a family is able to afford child care affects their income. If a family cannot work because they have to take care of their children, means that they are loosing money and with a low income they will have to sacrifice some of their basic necessities. This leads to more families falling under the poverty
