I have volunteered at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, The Weems Art-Fest, Light the Night, the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and many other great organizations. After being a part of Key Club throughout my high school years, I learned how to give back to the community that has raised me and the conspicuous impact I can have in someone’s life simply through volunteering. Through Key Club, I help create service projects with local organizations and give members of our club an opportunity to volunteer and give back. One experience I will never forget is helping set up a blood drive in school with one of our local organizations, Bloodworks Northwest, a local blood bank that helps saves lives through research, innovation and education in blood. Our Key Club had to inform the school of the event that was happening, and encourage students to donate blood. It required hours of creating posters, informing the…

After looking at the Fall/2017 schedule you made for me I had a question about taking bio and sw320 in the same semester. I noticed that in order to take sw320 I must complete a bio class. Can I take sw320 and bio at the same time or do I have to have bio completed? I received a D in the class so does that mean I can still take sw320 because I…

My parents used to fight each other when I was young. My father has a common characteristic which shows on almost all traditional Asia men and that is male chauvinism. When the wife is a traditional Asia woman, it builds up a happy family in the world. However, my mother has her own opinion so sometimes fighting became a common thing in our family. Even though when I grew up and they stopped fighting and started arguing, I still can remember the feelings – helpless, scared and anxious. Therefore, when I meet a client who has involved in domestic violence, my experience may affect my view and consultation for my clients. To be a professional social worker, I need to have an objective view and not taking any bias on clients. For example, I may feel sorry for the victims which represent me and my mother in my mind, and pursue them to make a decision that I recognize is good for them.…

Disability support worker; what does mean? To someone who is unaware of the term, they may think that it is just adult babysitting. Aside from that being offensive, it is so much more than that. It is devoting your time to spend with a person and to make them feel like person. To one person, it may not seem much to some, but to the right person, it could mean the world. Having the opportunity to meet individuals and making them feel empowered meant the world to me, and the smile on their face for their success. With knowing that you made an impact on their life, it makes a person feel like anything is possible.…

Ever since I was in fourth grade, I have enjoyed helping kids and watching them learn new things and grow. The best feeling is helping children with something and watching their faces light up as they discover what they can do all by themselves. While in fourth and fifth grade, I was a part of the buddy program at my school which entailed spending every lunch in the special education classroom at my elementary school. A trait I possess is being sequential and that is useful for the career I want because it will help me with staying organized and grading papers. I am an analyzer, I like to know what is going on around me and love to know how things work. This is a trait that comes in handy with being an elementary school teacher.…

    1. My main objective in terms of my career path is to work with diverse communities, specifically I would like to become a caseworker and work with immigrant and refugee communities to help them gain access to services and feel at home in their community. I think it is important that in every branch of social work there are individuals who are compassionate towards diverse populations and experience working with individuals whose first language is not English. Because of this, I am interested in pursuing a graduate degree in Clinical Social Work. My undergraduate majors are English Literature and Spanish, which at first do not seem like areas of focus which would naturally lead me into a career in social work, but honestly…

When you enter a new environment where you barely knew anyone, trying new things can be intimidating – especially when you’re a new freshman student. One particular day, there were various booths scattered outside the cafeteria as students were eating lunch. Our school offers a great variety of clubs and were showcasing them that day, so that students may sign up for them. One booth that particularly stood out was the booth for Key Club, which was operated by some members rocking some orange gear. As I read more about the club, I saw this as a perfect opportunity to meet people as well as contributing to my community. I immediately picked up the pen and signed my name on the sign-up sheet. This marked the start of a great year.…

I really liked reading your post. I also thought about working in a private practice setting. I think that working in a small setting, there is a lot more job security. Working in a high-populated setting means that there is a lot of competition in order to progress at work. I love competition, but I really don’t want to be in competition with about twenty-five other social workers. You have a lot of experience. I have barley even been alive for twenty years. I think that your experience will be very useful in social work. At my practicum, I work in a cubical and make dozens of phone calls a day. I rally don’t like to work in a cubical, I love doing field work, its when we visit peoples homes and actually talk to people in their settings. I…
