Social Stereotypes
Stereotypes are a set of specific characteristics force upon a groups of people or social groups, because of their gender, race or ethnic background. They generalize this groups and lead to acts of discrimination and ignore diversity of the group (Nadra Kareem Nittle). Stereotypes create unnecessary social tensions and lead to social divide.
Almost every day we are faced with gender, racial or ethnic stereotyping. Either if it’s a police arresting a black person wearing a “hoodie” just because he looks suspicious, or a big law firm promoting John over Emma as a partner in the firm, just because Emma is a women and its not a women’s job to be a partner in a law firm - “she should be a secretary” . Or people on a plane looking worried and scarred when they see a Muslim passenger boarding the plane, just because of a terrorist stereotype. All of this examples contribute towards institutionalized discrimination – discrimination that is incorporated in to the structures of the organizations (OpenStaxCollege). …show more content…
First of all, governing laws can and must be improved and need to be more strict on how to punish discrimination. Next, special trainings and social education must be introduced to change the stereotyping of a specific social groups. Also very important thing to do is to ensure equality in every aspect of a social groups, such as equal pay, equal opportunities, equal treatment, equal rights etc. As it will guaranty good starting point in elimination of stereotyping.
